Another average day. Except for the fact that you were a nervous wreck about the auditions. You were sure you did fine, but fine won't get you the lead role. What Chloe said hurt, but you won't let that bother you.

The school day went as usual. Every time you walked by the auditorium, you glanced at the wall to see if the callbacks had been posted. Three checks, and they weren't.

But when you were walking down to lunch, you noticed a piece of paper hanging on that wall. You approached. The paper read:

A Dream for Me Callbacks

Yun: 3pm Tomorrow

Chloe Block

Y/N L/N

You didn't stop to read who had gotten callbacks for the other roles. You had gotten the callback! You were so happy you had to stop yourself from screaming out loud in the crowded hallway. You stopped by Mrs Exdee's room to pick up your lines. It was a very emotional scene, but you knew you could capture the essence of Yun's character.

The only thing you were worried about was Chloe...

the next day...

You could barely contain your excitement during the school day--or your nerves. School ended at 2:30 and your callback was at 3...you knew you'd be the most nervous for that last half hour in anticipation.

You had texted Indi and Tess that day and told them about what you were going through. They were very supportive, saying things like "you were born to play this role!" and "mrs exdee just has to pick you!". It helped settle your nerves a bit.

You ran through the lines once more in your head on the way down to the auditorium. You knew them by heart from your studying, and you'd practiced endlessly the night before. You knew this part was yours.

The callbacks took place individually in Mrs Exdee's room behind the auditorium. You saw a few people trying out for Tommy and Dream go first, then...

"Y/N L/N! Your callback for Yun!"

You stood from your chair, taking a deep breath, and walked to the door at the back of the stage leading to Mrs Exdee's room. Chloe gave you a glare but you shut the door before she could say anything mean.

"Hello Y/N! It's nice to see you today," began Mrs Exdee, adjusting her glasses.

"Hi Mrs Exdee!" you greeted, "I'm very honored to have gotten a callback."

"You wouldn't have gotten a callback if you didn't deserve it, sweetheart. Now, you can begin with the starting lines whenever you're ready."

You took another deep breath and put your lines on the table in front of Mrs Exdee, face down. You got into Yun's character, and delivered the lines of the most emotional part of the whole play, even making appropriate arm movements and nearly crying near the end. The strain on your voice made it seem like you really had gone through all the hardships and tragedy Yun had to face.

Once you finished, you glanced up at Mrs Exdee. She was utterly shocked, then starting clapping. "Wow! That was amazing, Y/N! And all from memory!"

You smiled and took a bow. Mrs Exdee gathered herself and took out another piece of paper. "I have another test for you, to see if you really know the character you're playing. I'm going to give you a few phrases to say and tones to say them in, and you must be as in-character as possible. These lines are not from the play itself. Ready?"

You'd never gotten a callback before. So you'd always relied on endless practicing and iteration to deliver your lines with such passion. You almost started to panic, your secret weapon of memorization being disintegrated.

But no, you knew this play in and out. You'd studied Yun's character until you knew her mannerisms and attitudes better than you knew your own. You could do this. If anyone deserved this part, it was you.

"Yes, I'm ready."

Mrs Exdee gave you a small piece of paper with the words "I'm making a sandwich".

"I'd like you to read this in a happy and excited tone."

You thought about the body language you'd use to deliver the line. With a lot of outwards expression, you near shouted, "I'm making a sandwich!"

Mrs Exdee nodded, and handed you another piece of paper, telling you to read it in a sad tone. You put a frown on your face, and prepared to add a little extra strain to your voice.

You held your hands out in despair, "I...I wore the scarf!"

Mrs Exdee clapped, "Finally, I'd like you to say this one in an angry tone,"

The line? "I hate bubbles."

You morphed your expression into one of pure rage, "I hate bubbles," you spat out.

Mrs Exdee happily wrote something down in her notebook, "Wonderful, Y/N! You're free to go. I'll be posting the results tomorrow."

"Thank you very much, Mrs Exdee! Have a great day!"

"You too dear!"

You left the room, and strolled back into the auditorium with your head held high. Of course, Chloe was sitting in the front row with her legs crossed, examining her nails.

"Huh. Someone's happy," she scowled.

"Yup, and there's nothing you can do about it," you said with confidence, walking past her to your own seat.

"We'll see about that," she said, standing up and walking towards the stage as Mrs Exdee appeared. Her face immediately changed as she happily greeted Mrs Exdee. Suck-up...

You thought about sabotaging her homework or something. But no, she'd know it was you. Plus, other people were here, watching the exchange.

You grabbed your backpack and texted your sister, Cara, to come pick you up. Cara had graduated last year and was taking a gap year before deciding whether she wanted to go to college. So she's been your designated driver for this year.

The boy with the mop-like brown hair (Toby, was that his name?) awkwardly waved at you as you walked out of the auditorium.

"Good luck!" you said.

"You too", Toby said, before covering his mouth with embarrassment, realizing you'd already auditioned, "O-oh I meant, uh, I'm sure you did great!" he stammered.

You laughed, "Thanks! See you!"

Toby just waved at you again. What a nice guy.

You waited a few minutes for Cara to show up, and set in for a long night of second-guessing your performance.
