The last chapter was a prologue of sorts to show you what the rest of the book will be like. However I think we should back track a ways to where it all began.
It was another day in the fall of senior year at Aldera High School. The students within waited eagerly for the final bell to ring so they could all go home to their happy families. The minute hand was coming so close to making a full cycle around the clock. Anxiety. Heart racing. There was one student who didn't want to go home. She'd rather sleep in one of the classrooms and eat stuff from the school cafeteria: Maddie Enersai. She fidgeted with her thumbs as she stared at an incomplete assignment on her desk. Everything was a blurry image to her since she was all in her own mind. Soon the loud sound of the clock hitting three thirty made her jump.
"I-I..." Maddie snapped out her daze.
"Alright, if you haven't finished the assignment it is homework and I want it brought in tomorrow." The teacher told them all. "You're free to leave."
The class all started to grab their books and mingled with each other on the way out to their lockers. Maddie stayed behind for a moment until it was only her and the teacher left. The teacher noticed her lack of motivation to go home and gave her an annoyed look. Maddie couldn't make eye contact and excerted all of her awkward energy into moving her thumbs around each other.
"I... uh..." Maddie mumbled.
"No, you can't stay here. No, there is no after-school work for you to do. No, I cannot counsel you. No, I will not allow you spend the night here." The teacher glared.
Maddie felt sort of painful jolt in her heart from the rejection. She started to shake and had to hold back tear. "O-Okay..." she mumbled and got up from her desk.
"If you want to discuss your homelife, do it with the counselor. I am not your therapist." The teacher grabbed her bag and walked out the door before she did.
"T-The counselor got involved with my mom and when she found out, she..." Maddie muttered and burst into tears, moving her uniforms sleeve down her arm to hide a large bruise.
After being able to mostly regain herself, Maddie grabbed her books and headed to her locker. All of the other people of her grade had mostly cleared out, which was how she preferred it. It wasn't like she had anyone to talk to that wouldn't mock her. The small clangs of the locker door echoing through the hall brought her peace. The silence. It was what she craved. A moment of silence. A moment where it was just her. She had gotten sick of being around people. All of their lies, abusive tactics, and cruelty. Non but one truly loved her. That one person was the only reason she stayed alive: her younger sister named Riley.
Her mother Mikoto Enersai was one of the top Pro Heroes; ranked number nine of hundreds in Japan. She and Maddie's father Itsuki Enersai married for the sole purpose of Quirk breeding. Both had very strong Quirks. Itsuki: the ability to redirect any Quirk. Mikoto: energy control. Maddie was meant to get both Quirks, but only got Mikoto's. That was enough for five years where she was raised happily by her two loving parents. Then everything changed when her sister was born with with their Quirks. Suddenly, Maddie no longer was important. She was just a rodent mooching off of her mother. Itsuki and Mikoto's fighting became much more apparent to her and soon her father disappeared from their home and never returned. She was left with a mother who never loved her and a baby sister who had stolen any sense of peace she ever had in her life.
At the age of five, she was now left to survive on her own.
It had been almost thirteen long years of abuse from a cold woman obsessed with being the best. For the longest time, she thought it was only her who had to deal with an abusive parent, but the older she got the more she realized many people experienced this type of pain and loneliness. This was especially apparent with Pro Heroes and their children. The Pro Heroes had it easy since they could hide behind smiles and the media. She wondered if she'd meet a troubled soul much like her since there were so many heroes in Musutafu.
