I know I told her I don't owe her an explanation but this is bothering me. And it shouldn't.
It's 9 am on Monday and in the middle of a meeting yet I can feel her eyes boring into my face. I can smell her anger and but also her fear...
Huh. Now I'm curious. For a girl that was saved from a ghoul, unbeknownst to her, she sure is acting as if nothing happened.
"Alright, are we going with the Sky-space contract? It's the only one that will increase revenue and I have had my eye on this one." I say, eyeing everyone in the room.
"Sir, that contract has been in the eyes of our rival as well. It's a very good idea," says Mr. Neil, smirking.
"I'm very aware of our rival wanting this project, which is exactly why I want us to take it. I want it done by the end of the day." I say, looking my board dead in their eyes.
"Now, everyone may leave but Ms. Moon." I dismiss the meeting and look at her, holding her gaze.
I see her quiver in fear but still holding her stance with her head held high.
Interesting.
"Are you going to keep staring or do you want to ask me something? I can't read your mind."
Her brown eyes furrowed and she grips her clipboard tight to her chest. Biting her lip, she looks at me. "I know what you are."
"Oh? And what's that?" I say, sitting on the edge of the table, looking at her lips.
She eyes me head to toe, annoyed by my reluctance. I pretend I didn't notice. "I'm not saying it here."
"Hm. Interesting how you're whole attitude changed when you stormed out of my home two days ago. You think you know, but you don't." I say, shuffling papers into my hands and walking out of the meeting room, with her at my heels.
She's starting to anger me. "Anyway, you're better off not knowing."
"But, how are you..."
I stop in my tracks, grab her arm and feel my golden eyes turn red focus on her. I slowly lean my mouth to her ear, "I'd like you to desist the questioning for your good, Ms. Moon. Get back to work!"
I see her stand there shocked for a second and she quickly walks to her desk.
I slam my fist on my desk and rub my temples as I sit at my desk.
This is not an ideal situation anymore. This girl will be the end of me. Humans aren't supposed to know about us. The few that do are slaves or blood banks to some of the elite vampires. The vampire world is a secret from humans for a reason. Humans would not be able to handle living in a supernatural world. All hell would break loose. I'd like to avoid that as much as possible.
It's hard enough keeping my thirst down at work, now I have to worry about her blabbing to anyone else.
I also don't want her to come in harm's way. Why? I don't know. However, this girl is different. I can sense that.
"Dammit, I need a way to fix this. I'll need to call my father's old advisor. Maybe he'll know something."
*************************************************************************************
A couple of hours later after work and I'm at home with my advisor, Mr. Shon. I trust him with my life. He was my father's old advisor and was at his side helping him rule the vampire realm. It's through him that I learned everything I know. He's more like family.
"Your Highness, you called for me?"
"Mr. Shon, I need your help. I'm sorry I know it's late and you had plans..." I say, apologetically.
"Oh, sir it is alright! Any help the throne requires of me is an honor of mine to help. What can I help you with?"
I explained everything that happened and watch his stance change and a smile form on his face.
"I don't see why this is a happy reaction, Mr. Shon. What are you thinking?" I say, eyeing my advisor.
He knows very well I can read his mind hence I asked anyway. Being the vampire prince I have some powers.
"Your Highness, you say this woman found out about you and hasn't said a word to anyone?" He asks, rubbing his chin, thinking.
"Yes. If she had, I would know." I say, eyeing my advisor, wondering where he's going with this.
"And you felt something when you touched? Any other times you felt anything to this woman?" He smiles, clearly knowing something I don't.
"Well yes. It was an odd feeling but that's beside the point!"
I can see him chuckling and it turns into full-blown hysteria. His eyes started tearing up and he was keeling over holding his belly.
I watch him, waiting for him to finish. "Are you done? I don't understand why that's so important and why it's so funny. Explain already!" I demand.
He fixes himself and sits down finally. "Sire, don't tell me you don't know? Oh, this is hilarious. I know it's been more than a decade since your last mate but you should recognize the signs."
Normally, I'd have my subjects killed for laughing at me but Mr. Shon is different. But that's beside the point...
Mate.
He said, my mate.
I stare at him in disbelief. It was impossible.
My mate was murdered 200 hundred years ago. I mean she looks like her and there was the feeling every time we touched...
"It's impossible. She's just a human." I say, matter-of-factly.
"Ah, and that's the kicker. Vampires have had human mates longer than I've been on this earth. Your Highness, think of all the signs since you met this woman. It makes sense. Ah finally. You can find love again. Your Highness this is good news." He smiles and claps his hands, clearly enjoying this realization.
I hiss threateningly loud and grab a chair to throw at the wall. I blink out of the room angrily. I can still hear him giggling and clapping. "We need to prepare for our future queen!" I hear him say as I blink out the room.
Like I said. This girl will be the end of me.
