"Hey, you're wearing your glasses today. You tryin' something different?" Allison inquired, noticing Veronica not wearing her usual thin round glasses. The two of them were walking into their first class, English. Surprisingly, Veronica and Allison had the exact same schedule. It was an overcast morning at the high school, with clouds spread all across the sky, almost as grey as graphite. A crisp cool breeze was viciously blowing in the air. The old clock on the wall read 8:30 AM, and school was about to commence.
"Nope. Nothing particularly different, I guess. I just wanted my contacts out. Not sure why, though." Veronica shrugged as she replied.
"Ooh! You better not be changing your looks for a boy. I'll be onto you if you even think about trying that!" Allison made the accusation and laughed. Veronica stared deep into her eyes, inaudibly shutting down the allegation. "F- Fair enough..." Allison replied in defeat.
The school day went on as usual. English, chorus, history and science classes rounded out the first four periods. It was now time for lunch. Veronica and Allison sat together at their favorite table, next to the window that overlooked the school's courtyard. The two of them both packed their own lunches. There were four seats at the lunch table, but two of them always remained vacant. Only Veronica and Allison sat there. The chatter of students sounded in the background as they ate lunch.
"Alright, let's see... what food can I steal from you today?" Allison spoke with her mouth full of peanut butter, grape jelly and white bread. Veronica took a sip from her water bottle and responded.
"None today. I bring my thermos on Wednesdays, remember? That means my lunch is the slow cooker stuff from yesterday. Let's see... ooh! What a surprise! Chicken noodle soup just for me! Isn't that amazing?" Veronica told Allison, teasing her at the same time. Allison looked slightly disappointed, but moved on as she chewed on her baby carrots and celery sticks.
The two girls talked and studied throughout the lunch period. Midterm exams were coming up, and so was the famous winter chorus concert. A lot of activities were on their plates. However, another topic was in the back of their minds, more particularly Allison.
"Hey, so... do you remember those boys from yesterday?" Allison blurted out, Veronica nearly spitting out her soup after hearing her words. "I think I forgot their names... oh wait, Duncan and Charles! That's right! They're those guys who skateboard and play golf and you saved Duncan's life. Charles is the cute one, I remembered that part well!" she exclaimed as Veronica giggled.
"Uh, yeah, I do remember them. We'll go by the park to see if they're there after school. We agreed on that yesterday. But who knows... maybe they won't even recognize us. We could've just been some faces in the crowd to them." Veronica warned Allison.
"Ugh, it'd suck if they don't remember us, especially after you literally saved Duncan's life. Did you see Charles' biceps? Oh my gosh..." Allison continued talking about him, as Veronica rolled her eyes with a smile. The lunch period was now over, and it was time for the fifth class. Veronica and Allison walked down the hallway together.
The end of the day quickly arrived after three classes. Veronica and Allison were quick to exit the high school. As they turned onto the road towards the park, Allison's mouth opened to speak, most likely to ask for more food from the convenience store.
"Ah!" Veronica made a buzzer sound, cutting Allison off immediately. "Nope. Not today, sorry. I left my wallet at home and I know you did too. You'll live." Veronica's parental instincts kicked in. Allison groaned and rolled her eyes, but the two of them continued walking along the sidewalk, passing the football stadium and approaching the park. They eventually walked up to the skatepark. To their surprise, a masculine voice yelled out to them.
