years ago  //  Y/n age 8

It was just about 7:00pm in the evening, Y/n was alone as her mother had died years ago, and her father had been gone since last month.

She hadn't given up just yet, hoping for his return and the warm embrace he left her with the night he took off.

Y/n was out that day, picking berries and herbs from the earth after watering her garden not too long ago.

She had strayed far from her cottage, but there was no worry or hesitance in her step as she had the entire forest memorized from growing up in the large, deep area.

As she had just finished picking the freshest of berries, there was a shaking amongst the bushes across the clearing behind her.

She turned swiftly, waiting for whatever the cause was to come out.

"Hello..?" She called out curiously, her voice was soft and sweet, considering she was only just a child.

There was no reaction and she proceeded closer with he softest of steps one could make.

"It's okay, you can come out"

The brave girl waited, searching for any suspicious features hidden in the leaves.

Was it a rabbit? A squirrel? She didn't know, but whatever it was.. she wanted to befriend it.

Just then a taller.. boy, stood up slowly, wide eyed and baby faced, his mouth hung open in caution while staring at the small girl, carrying a basket of berries and herbs with her.

Y/n seemed to have the same expression, frazzled as she had never met another person in her entire life that was out of her bloodline...

The two stared at each other for what felt like ages before one started speaking just as the other did.

"Uh-"

"I-"

They stopped again, trying to estimate exactly when the other would start speaking.

After seconds of interrupting each other simultaneously, the two laughed at their awkward timing of speech.

The boy staggered forwards, using the tree for balance as he revealed himself to the little girl.

"I'm Viktor" he finally said.

Y/n's perked up in delight, his thick accent causing a rush of serotonin throughout her body and she smiled, the corners of her lips almost reaching her ears as she processed his greeting.

She was excited, she had never met another before... and to her luck, he seemed to be around the same age as her!

"I'm Y/n!" She raised her hand to him eagerly, practically vibrating as he shook it.

"What are you doing so deep in the woods?" He questioned, limping back to the bushes in search of something deep inside.

Y/n glanced at the sky, remembering that humans, small or big of any age, did not take a very good liking to witches.

"I could ask you the same thing" she shook off the question, avoiding any information of her cottage or her background.

Although she lived in the forest, she did not care to boast about it to some random boy she just met.. especially when he was a regular person probably incapable at the time for such knowledge as witches like Y/n.

"I was curious and went on a walk, I'm a little lost at the moment" Viktor responded with a sheepish chuckle.

He was a smart boy, for being 11 years old, but even the most intelligent man could never memorize the forest the first time they set foot in it.

Not like any man wanted to anyways..

Perhaps Viktor wasn't very aware of the rumours behind the forest, how a witch had been lurking deep in there, and that if you'd entered her territory, she'd use your blood for sauces in her dinner, or your bones for cleaning her teeth.

Turns out that so called murderous witch was just a sweet, intelligent little girl with messy hair and a longing for a friend.

"I can help you out, if you'd like?" Y/n offered with a smile.

Viktor's face lit up in return.

It wasn't long before he looked down at his cane, nearly broken as he'd taken a fall not too far from there.

The weak wood of it, chipping and just barely holding together.

Y/n also cringed, glancing down at his palms as they were bloodied with his cheek scraped red.

"Hm..." she hummed.

Viktor stared at her as she thought, brows knitting together as she constructed solutions to their problems as quick as she could before it had started getting dark.

"Close your eyes" Y/n proposed.

The boy complied, although it was suspicious, she was smaller than him, and younger if his calculations to her voice and height were correct.

Why would some random little girl care enough to hurt or attack another like him?

He felt the cold stings of water wash his hands, tiny fingers brushing over them gently, careful not to hurt him too much.

The same feeling matched against his cheek and he hoped the little girl hadn't noticed the pink colour that brushed over them as her thumb lightly brushed the excess water away.

It was then that Viktor was grateful for the scrape on his cheek, the pink tones around the injury covering for a embarrassed blush.

A strange, newer feeling wrapped around his hands not long after, following the pressure that surrounded it.

Just as Viktor was about to take a peak, Y/n caught his eyes and scolded him for his impatience.

"Ah! Ah! Ah! Hold on a little longer Viktor!" She ushered him carefully by the tree and took his cane, Viktor letting her in confusion to her antics.

The corners of his lips perked up slightly, amused as she had said his name so casually, and in a cute little angry voice he found comforting.

"Please do not tell me you're leaving me here to rot" he joked sarcastically.

"Shht!" She shushed him, trying to focus as she tore bark from the trees around her with a simple magic spell she learnt from her mother, and let them float to the cane to surround it with a strong yet smooth build and new, flattering cloud and star carvings etched into it.

The individual wood pieces lit up, Y/n focusing to compact it all together with her magic energy.

Viktor could hear her grumble softly, confused and concerned for whatever was happening outside of his closed eyes.

He swore he'd seen a light flash pass a second before Y/n had began panting heavily.

'What was going on?' He thought to himself.

That was until he felt his cane touch his hand did he open his eyes to see the new and improved exterior of the wood.

Not only that, but his hands were wrapped now, in a bunch of long plants he did not know the name of.

Viktor couldn't help but stare for the longest of time, in shock that one small little girl could improve his nearly broken cane in such a short amount of time.

"This is.. ha... t-thank you!" He exclaimed.

Y/n smiled back at his grateful expression before lending him a helping hand up to his feet.

"Now.. you said you needed out of here?"
