I look out at the bright blue water and feel the wet sand between my toes, the sun beaming on my already tan skin. Closing my eyes, I lay on my back and push my sunglasses up on my nose. The salty ocean smell wafts over my body as the sound of the waves crashing fills my ears.
Something about the beach, the sand that annoyingly gets everywhere. The somewhat nasty smell of the ocean and all that lives within. The feel of your skin beginning to burn as you forget to reapply your sunscreen.
I get into a sitting position and allow the sand to fall between my fingers, looking out across the water and watching the dolphin fins break the surface. A smile brushes across my lips and just as a wave comes close to the tips of my toes.
Off in the distance, I hear the sound of a bell ringing and a voice nagging me.
"Vera!" I squint my eyes and try to determine who the voice belongs to.
The sound of a book slamming on the desk wakes me up.
"Vera, wake the fuck up. It's time for lunch." Aspen smiles widely as she picks up her book and places a hand on her hip.
I groan and put my binder in my backpack, wiping the little bit of drool on my lip. I was sleeping good too, it's not my fault our economics teacher gets on my last fucking nerve. Throwing my pencil pouch in my bag, I zip it up and stand up to place one strap on my right shoulder.
"What were you dreaming about? Must have been good since you were full on drooling your ass off." I roll my eyes and shrug. "The beach."
"Hey Asp and V, what's up?" Raelyn bounces over with pep in her step, per usual.
"Oh nothing, just asking V what she was dreaming about in econ class, she was snoozing away." I throw a glare over at Asp as we walk into the cafeteria, grabbing our usual spot in the back. I walk towards the lunch line and grab a cheeseburger with the smiley fries, remembering to grab ketchup and a drink before I pay. Gripping my food tray, I walk back to the table and sit everything down, plopping in my seat as I grab a fry.
The girls walk back over and start eating as well. "So V, how is everything with that British guy you're talking to?" Raelyn asks with her eyebrow raised.
I look up at her. "It's going fine. He likes to send me a text every morning to check up on me and stuff. Everything has been quite amazing lately, considering the fact I'm just some chubby girl who can't get anyone in real life."
I feel glares on my skin as my eyes flit between Aspen and Raelyn. "Quit saying that shit about yourself. You are fucking beautiful, smart, caring, and absolutely amazing. I don't know why you aren't comprehending what we keep telling you."
I put some ketchup on my burger and started eating it, feeling a tear prickle in my eye as my emotions hit me. Stupid hormones.
"Well, I got asked to homecoming!" Raelyn smiles dreamily. Aspen and I look at each other and smirk. "Let us guess, Kai asked you." She nods enthusiastically.
Raelyn has been absolutely obsessed with Kai since the start of high school, she just started talking with him in our last year. I don't know how this girl has dealt with her feelings for oh so long. But I support her and I'm so proud of her finally making a move. "I'm so glad you're finally able to live out your dream. Who are you going with Asp?" I look over at her.
She bites on her lip and smiles towards the ground. "Jaxon actually asked me to go with him." I squeal and hug her tightly. "That's so exciting!!"
Both of the girls look at me. "So, who are you going with? Is your boyfriend flying in?" I glance at my hands. "He says he'll be flying in 2 days before homecoming, so I'm truly hoping Alex will be able to make it."
Aspen slightly rolls her eyes. "Just like how you fought on your birthday? Let's not forget the fact he said he'd be here for Christmas. And for your 1 year anniversary. But lookie here, he wasn't here. You really need to decide what's best for you V, I only care about you and your well-being." Raelyn reaches over and smacks her arm, shaking her head and mouthing for her to be nice.
I stand up and throw my bag on my shoulder, storming over to throw my trash into the trash can. I'm so tired of this lecture shit, I've told her that it isn't his fault he can't make it. Shit just keeps coming up. I hear both of them running after me and trying to get me to stop.
I reach up to wipe the tears off my cheek as I walk out to my car, opening the door and slamming it shut once I'm in the front seat. Raelyn taps on the window and Aspen tries to get the passenger door opened. "Just leave me alone, I'm going to blow off some steam. Leave me alone."
They both step away as I turn the key and put my car in drive, pulling off quickly and driving home. I can feel my heart racing as tears block my vision. Within 20 minutes, I managed to make it home. I turn the car off and grab my stuff, shutting the door and walking up to the front door.
I notice no one is home, so that's good for me. Unlocking the door, I take my shoes off and throw my bag on the floor near the kitchen table. Grabbing my phone and walking over to the couch, I flop down and send a quick text to Alex.
He quickly answers back and asks how my day went, to which I said it went fine and that I was just tired. He expressed some concern, but I told him not to worry about it. I ask if I can call him and he says that he can't talk and isn't comfortable calling me. After a year, I thought he would be comfortable with me, but I guess not.
I received a text from Aspen saying that she's sorry for what she said and she's only worried about my true well-being. I tell her it's fine and turn on the TV to watch some Grey's Anatomy. As I watch Meredith and Derek fall in love all over again, I can't help but wonder something.
When will that happen for me?
~ Okay, I swear this will be the last time I edit this book before actually completing it. I randomly was struck with inspiration and I'm now redirecting this story just one more time. I think I have it right this time!
‣ What's your opinion on Vera?
~ I am hoping that this will be the best that I can make it so far. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, just leave them within this chapter. I'll make sure to respond to any that may be present!
Thanks for reading!!!
