You rumbled softly to yourself, gently being awakened by a gentle scritching on your back. With a purr, you lift your head to find yourself in your partner's warm coils. Turning your head, you found that she was preening your fur, ridding it of the dirt, wood chips and pebbles from last night's trek, being careful not to scratch you with her jagged beak. Sensing your stare, she pauses her preening to look at you with her singular gem eye, which immediately lit up in relief at seeing you awake.
"Ah! You're awake! Thank the stars!" She presses her cheek against yours, a light purr rumbling in her throat as her coil tightened itself ever so gently around you. It was her adorable version of a hug. "That storm last night was merciless..." she then glares at the sky, eye narrowing at the still rather grey skies. "Stupid... unpredicable... earthly weather patterns!"
She grunts in frustration, cuddling you for a few minutes, enjoying the feeling of your still soft fur before she pulls away and inspects you pensively, her thin limbs brushing aside your bangs, revealing your tired (color) eyes. "How are you feeling? Do you need anything?Are you still hurting?" She grips your face gently inbetween her forelegs, her face tense with concern. "If so, where? How bad is it??"
You couldn't help but stifle a snort. Your health was always her top priority, even before you both became like this... you simply purred and gave her muzzle a little nudge, pushing her back slightly. "(Name) okay, Centi. Just a bit tired." You replied gently, your voice still quite rasped but reassuring. The insect-esc gem let out a soft huff of relief. You looked around, sniffing at the still very damp air, before looking back at your mate. "Where are we?"
Centi huffed, looking around herself. "It's... underneath the an organic's fort." She replied with an uncertain note I'm her tone. "I... don't know why, but I feel as if this place is familiar to me..." she looked around a bit more, trying to pinpoint what it was to make the place seem so familiar, but shook her head. "Ah, that's not important. All's that matters is that it makes for a much better shelter than the forest for now. It's far too wet there to try to rebuild our nest."
You looked around a bit. She was right. Unlike the skimpy, thin leaves and moist, cold dirt of your old forest nest, this one was rather sturdy and comfortably dry nest, with slightly damp but soft grass to lay on. Even so, you still felt an air of worry. The sides were still quite open, sending a damp, chilly wind through the small space and you found yourself snuggling deeper into Centi's coils. "A bit exposed on the sides..." you muttered, to which Centipeedle gave a squawk of a chuckle.
"An easy fix!" She chirped confidently. "All's it needs is a bit of touching up and presto! We have ourselves a nice new home!" You couldn't help but smile at centi's enthusiasm. It never wavered after all these years... and perhaps she was right about the touch up. She was already excellent at building nests, who's to say she couldn't make this one an acceptable home?
However, you still had that nagging feeling of concern in your gut, as you looked up at the solid roofing of your nest, frowning uneasily. "And... what about the owner of this fort?" You asked nervously, pressing a tentative forepaw against the roof. "What if... what if they come back?"
Centi scoffed. "Tch. Let em try!" She growled. "If they try to harm one hair on your head, I'll corrode them to mush!" She hissed confidently, with a snap of her jaws, sending a spray of acidic spit into the sand, which sizzled upon contact. You hummed, still wincing. As much as you wanted to be assured by your mate's confidence, your mind still buzzed with worry. And Centi must have seen your doubt as her face softened, and she set a forelimb on your shoulder.
"Please... trust me. Don't worry so much; leave all that to me." She presses her cheek into yours, nuzzling you in a comforting manner. The warmth and smoothness of her muzzle allowed you to relax against her. "I'll take care of you all." She rumbled softly, purring as she felt you relax in her embrace. "I promise, I'll protect you better this time."
You took a deep breath, a soft purr rumbling in your throat as you nuzzled her back. "Of course, Centi." You softly murmured to her. "(Name) trusts her." At this, Centipeedle gave a rasped purr of her own, a very cheery look as she clapped her forepaws together. "Ah, thank you, my love!" She cheered, in quite a bit of relief "I promise everything will be okay!" She then untangled herself from you. "Now then, you sit here and relax, while I find you guys something to eat! Then I'll get started on renovations!" She starts to leave the nest, but pauses after a few steps. She then turns to you and grips both your cheeks into her forepaws, staring at you intensely with a concerned eye. "Don't move from under there. But if anything happens, roar as loud as you can. I'll be there in a flash."
You nodded, smiling. "Yes, ma'am."
Centi purrs, releasing her hold on your face, before leaning down to press her muzzle to your abdomen gently. "I'll be back in a jiffy."
With that, she turned and went on her way to gather materials for you, as you watched with a smile curling your muzzle, running a midpaw over the small swell in your belly.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Headcannon, Centipeedle is the type of lover that is concerned about her partner's safety and can be as anxious as pearl.
I also like to think she's somewhat aware of what happened to her (I.E. corruption) and is especially concerned with your health because of it.
