Ko closed the door behind him with a soft click. His gaze fell on Iris, still standing in front of his bed. Her eyes went wide at first, then she looked away, almost embarrassed.
Iris looked tense and he didn't like it one bit. He wanted her to feel comfortable again, like the Iris who hugged him and held his hand so freely.
"Tabi na lang daw tayo. Hindi rin kasi namin mahanap yung extra na kama." Ko started, breaking the silence. He sat at the part of the bed near where Iris was standing and looked up at her.
"Okay lang ba?" He said softly. He leaned back, both hands supporting him from behind, so he could see her better.
"Okay lang..." Iris answered, still looking away. Her voice barely above a whisper.
"Tsk, 'lika nga dito." Ko held her wrist and motioned for her to sit on the bed beside him. Then he stood up in front of her and lowered himself so his eyes were level with hers.
"Bakit ang tahimik mo?" Ko asked, his eyes going over every part of her face, as if determining where to look for the answer.
"Just awkward...I don't know." Iris replied. Without a word, Ko held the tips of Iris's hair. They were soft curls that had been let down from her ponytail.
She looked beautiful.
Her cheeks were apple red too, as always, and Ko thought about how perfect it was that her favorite fruit were apples. The thought made him laugh, making Iris tilt her head in confusion.
"Pa'no ka magiging mas komportable?" Ko asked. But Iris couldn't answer. She thought about how she kad kissed Ko on the cheek earlier, how she ran outside to hug him like a wife who hadn't seen her husband in years. She thought about how Ko had said he wished he could keep her.
Her thoughts were cut off by the feeling of a hand caressing her cheek. Iris's breaths had turned shallow, her lips parting on their own. And just when she thought Ko was going to kiss her, he stood up instead and pressed one at the top of her head.
Iris closed her eyes and felt the heartbeats thundering in her chest. She liked this. She liked this feeling so much.
Eventually, when Ko felt that Iris was more comfortable, he tucked her to bed and gave her a kiss on the forehead.
Iris noticed Ko was walking away. "Saan ka punta?" She called.
"Tingnan ko lang yung ginagawa kong kanta. Mauna ka nang matulog, susunod din ako." Ko assured her. In reality, he thought Iris could fall asleep faster without him beside her. But of course, that wasn't the case.
"Ko..." Iris called for Ko a few minutes later, elongating the "O" sound at the end of his name in the most endearing way. She couldn't sleep. Even with the comforter and the pillow being fluffy, she still felt cold and alone. She wanted to be near Ko.
"Hmm?" Ko asked. He was flipping through CDs when Iris answered, "Tulog na tayo. Can you work on that tomorrow? I can't sleep."
Ko smirked to himself, glad that he had been wrong. Of course Iris wouldn't prefer sleeping alone. He had to swallow his laugh, instead replacing it with a grin he couldn't hide.
"Sige, yun lang pala eh." Ko replied. He wasted no time and climbed into bed, making sure to set the light on his lamp to dim. Iris seemed to prefer sleeping with a soft light too.
Iris sighed in relief when she felt Ko slip in the covers beside her. Maybe it was because she was too sleepy, but for once she didn't think too much anymore about the teasing tone of his voice. Instead, she wrapped her arms around his waist and buried her face by his arm.
Now it was comfortable, and she drifted off to sleep with no worries.
Meanwhile, Ko inhaled slowly through his nose and tried his best to stay calm. Iris was another kind of adorable when asleep, and he didn't want to wake her up. He squirmed his way to a better position on the bed as quiet as he could muster, just until he could stare at Iris's face and make sure she was leaning on his chest instead.
He lifted his free hand and parted the strands covering her eyes. He didn't know how long he stayed like that, just memorizing how Iris's lips curved, how her eyelashes fluttered, the slight sparkle in her lip balm that he wanted to taste, but eventually sleep caught up to him. He yawned and closed his eyes, wrapping his arms around the girl beside him too.
"Bahala na nga," he muttered to himself. Iris moved a bit, accommodating Ko's embrace. Ko smiled and pressed yet another kiss on her face, this time it landed on her eyelids.
The rain had calmed down outside, and only the occasional barking from the neighbors' dogs could be heard.
"Good night, Iris." Ko whispered. He wasn't sure if he imagined it, but as he was drifting off to sleep, he felt Iris hug him tighter.
