The word "Destroyed" was an understatement for the city of Charlotte, North Carolina. Demolished? Obliterated? I don't even know how to begin a description of the aftermath.
Charlotte was nothing but a junkyard now. Buildings turned to rubble and vegetation covering the outer area, truly there's nothing left other than a grim silence.
I don't know if the people living here escaped. I'll never know if those people are 6 miles away or 6 feet under. Either way, I knew I wouldn't see any hope for this heap of trash ever again.
A sudden cry for help breaks the silence of the city and causes me to jump from shock. The cry only came from around the corner.
I almost slip on the soaked concrete road while dashing towards the noise.
A sinkhole. Right where the Bank of America stadium used to be. And it's swallowing a bright yellow construction crane like a Goliath.
There's a man on that crane. I'm stiff as a statue just watching him struggle. I yell towards him. "Hey! I'm gonna find a way up there, hang on!" I hide my gear in a small shrub and begin running towards him.
I climb and leap across pieces of the ruined stadium trying to reach the crane. Upon closer observation, I see that his leg is impaled on a snapped off part of the crane. I sprint over to him, dodging any rubble in sight.
The roar of metal bars clanging against each other practically burst my eardrums. The crane's sinking into the abyss below.
I go as fast as I can to try and save him. No matter what I am determined to save him.
The segment of the crane the man is stuck to cracks off the rest of the structure like a branch struck by a lightning bolt. The crane, along with the man, collapse to the ground below.
I finally reach the area where the man landed. I wish I didn't. The stranger's leg was free, but now there was a metal bar going clean through his stomach.
I approach him. He's still conscious, barely alive. He reaches his trembling hand out towards me. "Help... Me..." He whispers. "Help.. Them... Save them... Please.."
He hands me a map and points to the part labeled "Concord" and pulls a picture out of his jacket pocket. It's him along with a little girl with long brown hair and a teenage boy with a buzzcut.
I take the map and the picture and pull out my Glock from it's holster. "I'll find them", I tell him. "I promise you this."
He gives me a weak smile and struggles to say one more thing. "Carter. The name's Alex Carter." I smile. "Nice meeting you, Alex", I softly say.
I grab his hand and shake it delicately, as I put the Glock to his temple...
And end his pain.
