In the end, you still have a job to do. If you would call it that. To you, it just seemed like glorified babysitting. After another restless night thanks to a couple mob hybrids and your persistent paranoia, you were left groggy and moody. You just wanted to get this tutoring session over with and take a long nap, but Isaiah wasn't making it easy.
"(Name)." He called out to you.
Though his tone nor his expression never gave away much, you knew what he was going to say. Mainly because he's been saying it every few minutes or so.
"Tell me what happened."
By 'him,' he was, of course, referring to Connor. You kept your eyes glued down to the floating book in front of you, its foreign symbols taunting you.
Connor was long gone by now, having been picked up by Lillian and some other man, claiming to be his father. You were a bit hesitant to let the creeper hybrid go (he was going with Lillian after all), but Connor seemed smug as ever. So, you let him be. There was nothing you could do at this point, you told yourself. It was his decision to come back and he would have to deal with the risks. You weren't responsible for him, at least not anymore.
That didn't mean that nauseous feeling still didn't linger. It was ever-present which made it so hard for you to talk to Isaiah right now.
Could you even trust him?
Your first friend in this foreign land. A guard who wouldn't hesitate to put his life on the line if meant that anyone else would be safe. But, he was someone who was under direct influence from Lillian. What if he was only meant to keep an eye on you? To stay close and then report back to Lillian as if he were a spy. The thought of Isaiah only hanging around you because Lillian told him so made you feel even worse somehow.
"(Name)." You faintly hear your name being called again along with the feeling of someone gently taking the lapis out of your hands.
You didn't realize that you were so caught up in your thoughts that you were clenching the lapis as if you had a vendetta against it. Feeling Isaiah's stare on you made you shake your head and relax a bit. You've been avoiding this conversation the whole session. Now's the time to bite the bullet, you guess.
What Isaiah means by 'what happened,' he means how did you of all people come across someone like Connor, and why were you sympathizing with him? The latter part of that interpretation somehow made him a lot more... angry than he thought it would. To watch a close friend be manipulated by someone who obviously has bad intentions was hard enough, but for that 'friend' to willingly side with the cause of destruction was even more heart-aching.
No, Isaiah told himself, you weren't at fault here. Connor was the one who lied and threatened to get his way. Isaiah was sure of it. Hidden under his unchanging features was an immeasurable amount of guilt. You've been dragged into something dangerous, something that Isaiah wanted to protect you from. Something that he wasn't sure he could protect you from.
A small frown unintentionally formed on his face just now, causing you to almost reel back. Everything in you tightened. You stayed silent, dreadfully anticipating what he was going to say.
The iron-golem hybrid took a moment to gather his thoughts as he did any other time. Simply put, the silence was tense. Any conscious thought for you was put on the back burner as you watch Isaiah thoughtfully stare at the lapis in his hand.
Isaiah turns around, leaving his back turned. You two didn't trade any words as he set the lapis down and began to look for something else. Your mouth opened to speak, but no words came out. You had nothing to say but you wanted to fill the silence... with something, anything.
Nevertheless, you stayed patient, you eyes wandering around the room. The Enchanting Room was a small little hut in the middle of town, free for everyone to use. It was fully decked out with an unnecessary amount of bookshelves and a surplus of lapis. But, it was seldom used. Diamond gear was rare and enough experience orbs for good enchants was exceedingly more rare.
Your thoughts about how often enchanting was overlooked was interrupted by Isaiah presenting something to you.
It was a flower pot with a red poppy planted in it.
You look at the plant and then up to Isaiah. This was something unexpected.
At your confused reaction, Isaiah grew embarrassed. He couldn't find a better time to give this gift to you and he was hoping to ease the tension. He didn't know how to do it with words so this was his only option. Your silence and lack of excitement made him want run away into the forest to never be seen again.
"Take it."
His voice took you by surprise after staying silent for so long. "What?"
"Nevermind." Bashful, Isaiah turned away, hoping to go on as if that whole thing didn't happen.
"W-Wait. I'm sorry. I was just confused. That's all." You explain, hoping you didn't seriously offend the iron-golem hybrid. You were already hurting him by keeping him in the dark, you supposed. Even if you were slightly suspicious of him, that didn't mean he didn't have feelings and his own ambitions.
Isaiah turned back, but was still reluctant to meet your eyes.
"I was told that making gifts for people helps them feel better. It is considered a nice thing to do when you want them to know that you do not feel any hate towards them." He explained, offering the poppy once again.
Even though he wasn't one to speak that much, he found himself saying even more. "I was going to give you this earlier to say thank you for teaching me a lot of things and for... for tolerating me— no for being someone who I could trust. So, take it."
You receive the poppy graciously and examine it with a fond smile. Simply put, you were in awe.
"Did you craft this yourself?" You asked.
Isaiah curtly but proudly affirmed that he did. You laughed to yourself, it was hard to harbor ill feelings towards the iron golem hybrid when he did things like this out of the blue.
"Thank you, Isaiah. I really mean it. I'm sorry to make you worry so much. I know you're just looking out for everyone as a guard should, you know?"
A pause passes before Isaiah replies, "I was once told that I failed to protect someone dear to me and that they paid the consequences for it. I was also told that I could not live with the pain of losing someone that I cherished. I paid the consequences of that..."
There was a hardened resolve in Isaiah's eyes and this time, he looked you in the eyes directly.
"I do not 'look out for everyone' as you say, just because I am a guard, not because I am an iron golem either. I do it because I, Isaiah, will not fail again."
