Summer of '87
———

It was the perfect night, shops were overcrowded, and the store owners to busy to pay attention to their inventory. It was the night to cause chaos.

That's what this trio planned to do. The Skaters rolled along the boardwalk gliding and twirling their way around the crowd. Well for two of them at least, Victoria seemed to struggle a bit.

Now don't get me wrong, she was a fantastic skater but when she gets flustered she tends to become a little clumsy. And when I say a little, I mean a lot.

"Rocky get a grip, you are embarrassing yourself," Grace said to her friend. Victoria muttered apologies to little kids and the others that she bummed into. "Give me a break you know I don't do well in crowds!" She called out.

Stopping at a wooden railing they took a smoke break. "I don't think we could have picked a better night, Grass" The three stood across a comic shop eyeing up the vulnerable merchandise.

Grace held up a cigarette staring at the two passed-out adults who ran the shop. "Shur did." She took a few more puffs from her cigarette and put it out on her skate. "Let's go window shopping ladies." Grace pushed off the railing and hailed ass towards the store, her two friends giggling as they followed.

Bell stopped outside the opening at a large cart of comics 'browsing' the options, while the other two continued farther into the store. None of them planned on reading any of the comics, they just wanted to cause an inconvenience to the owners.

Grace and Victoria rolled through the back of the store looking for things that might have been expensive, or whatever they could fit under their leather jackets quickly enough.

"Grass look." Victoria got the attention of her friend who was currently stuffing rolled-up comics in her pants. "What? I'm doing something." Victoria pointed in the direction of a certain comic. Grace's eyes go big. "Holy shit, is that what I think it is Rocky?" She asked Tori whose mouth had been hanging wide open.

"It can't be, but god if it is grab it and let's roll." Victoria made her way toward the shelf that held what they'd been looking at, Batman fourteen. She snatched it from its place and ran to her friend. "It is, it's Batman fourteen."

Grace looked at the comic and laughed. "Mouse will flip when she finds out we got something this good. Put it somewhere so we can leave this dump." Victoria saluted. "Yes ma'am."

This always made the girls look forward to the summer. Getting high, being carefree, and being rebellious. It made them feel alive.

The two girls made it past the cash register and towards the exit. Victoria was a giggling mess and Grace had her hands in her back pocket. They were coming up to the door when two boys stopped them.

"Find everything, alright ladies?" One boy with a red bandanna asked eyeing them up and down. Victoria noticed this however and stepped in front of her friend. Grace had the most comics on her and both of them didn't get this far just to get caught.

"No actually. We were looking for horror comics, but we didn't see any." Victoria stated bluntly.

"Oh really? Have your friend lift up her shirt then because it seems to me you found everything you wanted and extra." The other boy spoke this time. Grace stepped out from behind Victoria. "How do we know you're not just trying to see my rack dude?"

"Besides putting two comics under your bra you have put eight in between your waist and your pants. Not to mention that rare comic your friend has, Batman fourteen, that's eight dollars alone."

The two girls looked at each other in disbelief, how did they not notice the boys hiding? This place is basically an open floor plan.

"Ya right, you just want the money, kid." Vicky rolled her eyes. "Look dude we didn't take anything, trust me." Grace tried to appeal to the boys. "Whatever Grass, let's go." Victoria was over this, she just wanted the rare comic to go, her mood was ruined for the night.

The kid with the red bandanna grabbed her Grace's arm roughly. "I don't think so dude, security!" The boy waved over an officer a few stores down and he quickly made his way over.

"Hey, you little twerp let go of her!" Victoria went for the boy but the other held her back.

Grace was looking for anything; a glass shelf, a hardback book, a rod, anything that could get this kid to let go of her for even just a second. She was scanning the store when her eyes landed on Bell.

"Thank the lord for Mouse," Grace whispered. She was so quiet that they forgot all about her. They made eye contact and Bell knew what to do.

She took both hands on either side of the cart she had been standing by and yelled at the boys. "Hey, ass holes over here!" The kids looked in her direction, completely taking their attention off the girls they had been holding onto.

Bell immediately flipped over the cart as hard as she could and the comics went everywhere. "What the hell!" The boy with the bandana yelled. They sprinted towards the entrance of the store and by the time they were there, Bell was gone.

The other two girls took this as a chance to book it. They sprinted past the boys and went after their friend. Thank god for skates. The boys attempted to follow them but the crowd of people was too thick.

The girls were going so fast that the people were practically flying out of their way. Their screams and laughter filled the air and they didn't look back.

Once they were far away, the girls dived into an alleyway.

"Hell, that was fun." Grace was surprised that they made it out of there. "Ya, you're lucky I was there to save your asses." Bell had her hands on her knees, she was out of breath, and all of them were.

They all stayed in the alleyway catching their breath, waiting to see if they has been followed. "I'm hungry after that shit show let's go get food." Victoria broke the silence.

"Ya. Got a craving for Chinese right now?" Grace asked her friends. "Shur does, let's roll." Bell led the way and the girls wore off.

It was the first night of summer break and they had already gotten on people's raider. It was going to be a fun and long break and they just broke the ice.
