Jace

Hawk was a machine. As human beings went, Kayla didn't weigh all that much. As an awkwardly shaped backpack, she was substantial. Hawk had been carrying her most the way back. Jace had only been spelling him for a few minutes and was already fatiguing.

"You smell nice," Kayla said at his ear.

"There's the Kayla I love. As soon we're sure you're ok, we'll find somewhere private and I'll show you how much I missed you."

"What, you think I'm that easy?"

"You are many things. Easy has never been one of them. I've known you for a long time, though, and you just spent two days with nothing to keep you entertained but your fantasies."

"Ok, fair point. Hawk is kinda cute," she said.

"There are plenty of guys like Hawk back home. You didn't drive seven hours for him."

"You think I drove all this way to get laid?"

"No. But I think I'm not going to find out why until I abuse your body for a few hours." He'd reached the limit of how far he could carry her, so he stopped and let her slide off onto her feet. When he turned, her mouth pressed against his hungrily. He kissed back just like he was supposed to, accepting, demanding more.

She broke the kiss and just stared at him. "What have you done with my Jace?"

He looked away, embarrassed. "I may have had a little practice this summer."

"With Emily?"

"I told you, I don't even know her." Could it have been Chrissy? It didn't make any sense.

"Let's get going. I just called and the ambulance will be there any minute," Hawk said as he came over to squat for Kayla.

"Hawk, if you want to, you know," she said as she wrapped her legs around him, "go a little faster, I would be very ok with a bumpy ride." She winked at Jace.

It was good to see her feeling more like herself.

Kayla

True to her word, Page caught up to them shortly before they arrived at the cars. Once there, she borrowed a pair of tights from Kayla's luggage. They looked better on her than they ever had on Kayla.

This appeared to be the most interesting thing going on in the area, as two patrol cars had arrived ahead of the ambulance. They were preparing to take her statement as the paramedics fussed over her.

She almost missed it, the look of sadness and longing on Page's face as she watched Jace hover over Kayla.

"No. It was just me. I'm so stupid," she told the police officer. "I wanted to impress Jace by taking a selfie from the top. It was so easy to get up there. I just couldn't figure out how to get down." They were hooking her to an IV, putting to rest any hope she had of not going to the hospital. Truth be told, she was crashing pretty hard. The drug cocktail had long sense worn off.

"Sadly, that's not the first time I've heard that story about the Jail. You really shouldn't be climbing alone out here."

"Oh, don't worry about that. I'm pretty sure I'm never climbing anything ever again."

They started packing her into the rear of the ambulance, telling Jace, "I'm sorry, but you'll have to drive separately. Only direct family can ride along."

"Oh, give me a break. Her family is halfway across the country," Page said.

"It's the rules, Page. I could get in trouble."
