Emily's POV
I wake up with a start, covered in sweat. Another nightmare. They just keep getting worse. I glance over at my clock. Ugh, it's only five! I let out a frustrated sigh and collapse back on the bed. As soon as my head hits the pillow, I hear footsteps coming from the kitchen.
My heart starts speeding up. I look across the room and see Katie sleeping soundly on the top bunk while Abbie's is empty. She never gets up this early. That girl loves her sleep more than anything. I'm not kidding. She will sleep for the whole entire day if we didn't get her up.
Panic starts to seep in as images of a beaten and bruised Abbie pop up. Quietly as I can, I slip out of bed and tip toe over to Katie. I climb up the ladder and start roughly shaking her.
"Katie. Katie get up," I whisper. She stirs but doesn't wake up. "Wake up!" I hiss. I slap her cheek, not hard enough to hurt her.
"Mmm. What was-" I slap my hand over her mouth. She gives me a crazed look before hearing the noise. I take my hand away while she goes to look underneath her.
"She's not there." She gives me a curt nod, understanding what's going on.
"Ready?" I nod and climb down. We don't have anything to use as a weapon. If the intruder has a gun, then we're screwed. Let's hope we can surprise them.
Katie and I hide near the entrance of the kitchen. On the count of three, we charge around the corner, both of us letting out a warrior cry.
We slam into a small body, knocking all of us to the ground. We desperately try to pin them down, but red hair keeps flying in my mouth. Wait, red hair?
"What the hell?!
"Abbie?!" We push ourselves to our feet and help her up. Katie gives me a quizzical look before she rushes to explain.
"We thought you were an intruder!"
"What? Why?"
"I heard footsteps and you weren't in your bunk. You never get up this early so I thought something happened to you," I explain.
"I'm fine, well I was before you two attacked me."
"Yea, sorry about that." Katie sheepishly grins.
"Wait, why are you up so early?" I question. She shrugs.
"I don't know. I just woke up early." She turns around and resumes fixing breakfast. She hums a pop tune while the sound of sizzling bacon fills the air.
"Ok, who are you and what have you done with Abbie?" Katie teases. "This doesn't have anything to do with your date, does it?"
"Maybe."
"Oh yea. How'd it go?" I ask.
"A girl doesn't kiss and tell," she smirks. I gasp.
"You two kissed?!" I screech.
"Tell us more!" demands Katie. I feel a light buzz in my pocket.
"Shoot. Looks like you'll have to tell us later. Christy needs us as soon as we're ready."
"Aww! I need the details!" Katie whines.
"Don't worry, I'll tell you guys later." She pats Katie's head playfully.
"Fine. I guess I can survive 'till then," she sighs dramatically. I roll my eyes at her.
"C'mon. Let's go drama queen before Christy gets mad." She sticks her tongue out at me as I duck into the bathroom. "Ah, what would I do without you."
