Called It. Was all that Maddox could think at the time. After the small kid called him a 'glass face boy.' Everyone bursted laughing. He just wanted to go home.
As Maddox walked to his first class it seemed like everyone in the school was following him. Calling him things such as 'scar face' 'car wreck' and of course 'glass face.'
People were trying to poke and touch his scar, but the stitching was getting loose because of it, so he pushed everyone away and locked himself in a janitors closet.
He may stay in there all day."Bye Maddox!" I watch him walk towards the bus stop. He looks gloom and I don't blame him for that, the accident was still just a few days ago.
I walk back inside the old townhome we reside in, it's cozy but the living room wall has been covered with some sort of blanket for now before professionals come and fix the wall. It's mind boggling to think this all happened in one instant.
I walk into the kitchen to make me breakfast, I can't decide on what to make though.
I decide to make some hash browns.
I rip open the bag and put 3 on a tray, I open the oven and-
FFRROOM
I jump back and gag as dark smoke fills the kitchen, the smoke alarm trips and creates an ear bleeding noise that goes VEEERN VEEERN.
I rush to the boiler room to get the fire extinguisher, it's a good thing I bought one just in case. I run back into the kitchen, barely breathing thanks to the smoke.
I lift the nozzle, and press the trigger. After what seems like an hour, kids finally start fizzing out of the halls into their first period classes. At least that's what I think, I can't be too certain, if I open this door and there's still 6th graders there, I'm done for, they'll pull off my stitches like the brats they are.
I just want to see Calvin again-
"MADDOX!"
I jump and hit my head on the coat hanger, of course I had to sit right under it.
The door opens and reveals my Counselor, Mr Haddei, but you pronounce it Had-e.
I sit up and look right at his bearded chin, I'd rather not look at peoples eyes, so I look at their chins instead. And boy, his chin is completely covered up by his fading yellow beard.
"Maddox, come to my office please," He walks off.
I stand up and follow him towards the counselors office. Some of the smaller rooms in the school for some reason, and all the walls are yellow for some reason.
We walk into his room that has a gold, well, fake gold nameplate saying, 'HADDEI' it was big and bright, but somehow my friend Calvin still manages to miss his office, probably because every room in this building looks the same.
He pulls up a chair and I plop down in it, finally, I get to relieve some of the stress in my body.
Haddei sits in his chair and looks down, It's oddly quiet, he usually would start talking before we even step into his room. Did I do something wrong?White powder like substance covers the kitchen, the smoke alarm is still going off, it still smells like smoke, and I haven't even ate a hash brown yet!
I hold the fire extinguisher just in case if there's any sneaky smoke hiding somewhere because I'll catch it.
I look towards the oven, and I see my crucial mistake.
I left the oven on since last night. The night I got Maddox back from the hospital.
God how can I be this stupid? I never make mistakes like this, at least, I thought I wouldn't.
I turn the knob from 350 to 0, and close the oven door.
I look around in every corner looking for possible clouds of smoke somewhere, but no avail.
I walk towards the boiler room to put the fire extinguisher back, that's when I met even more smoke!
It must've fled behind my back before I extinguished the kitchen, those damn particles, I'll finish them off this time.
I lift the nozzle and press the trigger.
Pffttttttttt...
The white substance doesn't come out, I swear to god, it this thing is somehow out.
I press the trigger again.
ffffffff.
Well that's just great isn't it?Haddei finally looks up and says, "Maddox, I've heard what happened a few nights ago."
"Oh, uh really?" I say reluctantly.
"Yeah, it's a damn shame. I really was taken aback you know?"
"Yeah, I would know," he seems calm about this, I wonder what he will lead up to with this.
"I am so incredibly sorry, for the loss of your friend,"
Wait what?
"Uhh what are you talking about?" I reply praying that it isn't-
"Your friend Calvin died in a car accident."
