One day after US lost to Brits.
Right now I'm at this Team USA dinner function. My mom let me stay another day so I could go to this. I don't know what changed her mine but I'm happy to have another day with Haz because I was able to bring him as a date.
Coach Deb walked up to the podium."Today I would like to thank all of my lovely girls I got to work with for the past four years working on volleyball skills. But there is one person I really need to point out. This young women has just encountered a huge loss in her life. Her father. She is the star of the team and our amazing setter. The beautiful and very talented, Abigail Stevenson. Right during the last match Abby got a call from her mother saying that her father had passed, but Abby didn't let that stop her from playing the game she loved. I knew if it was me I would've broke down and drowned in my own tears right then and there but Abby got back in the game. She may have not won the serve for us but she still got In there and did what she needed to do. Abby has always told me how her dreams were winning the gold in the summer Olympics. She may have not won the gold that she has been dreaming for her whole life but that doesn't mean she still can't. Abby please come up here for a second. "
I walked up and stood right next to her. At this point I felt warm tears running down my face. She handed me a ribbon with a gold piece on the end.
On the back it read:
Star of the Stars and Stripes
I gladly took the gold and place it over my neck. I may have not won the gold I bargained for but I still won the star award and that's pretty amazing to me. I now have my own gold to keep and to hold to this day forward.
