The members have been hard at work designing their comeback, many meetings and strategies have been agreed on. I'm currently concentrating on one particular song, but the members have been hard at work with their regular team to record the rest of their album. I have regular meetings with the larger team, so we are on the same page as cohesion is important.
I also meet with the managers separately. Part of the reason I was selected to come on board was to help give some insight into how we can penetrate the fickle western market, so it's unique that I get to weigh in on the marketing side of things which is way beyond the scope of a regular producer.
"Look, here is the thing. ARMY and the rest of the world have already fallen for Agust D, but I need that to happen in the States ahead of the new comeback. Yoongi doesn't even need to release a new mixtape; we just need to spread the word that he is one of the world's premier rappers and producers and make it known if you aren't on board with Agust D yet, then you are the epitome of uncool," I explain.
Big Hit's main manager sits at a desk in front of me, and I'm trying so hard not to be intimidated. This man knows his business, so I feel absurd speaking with him. I just keep mentally reminding myself that they asked for my opinion, and I'm not just inserting myself into a conversation that I don't belong in.
"First, we start some Twitter chatter about it. I have some connections in the west that can start playing some Agust D tracks over there on heavy rotation, and we let everyone know that Daewitcha is everyone's new anthem for strength. It's the song you listen to that will push you through a difficult situation, when you need to get hyped up before a big meeting, when you are nervous about a new job. Hell, it's the song that gets you to go the extra mile on the treadmill! I predict that if we can start the buzz, it will take on a life of its own, and it won't be long before some Hollywood types will want to brag they are listening to it and post it on their social media to get clout. It's completely free marketing. When the buzz is at an all-time frenzy, we release the song I'm working on with the guys. Yoongi is going to be featured as he is writing and performing the entire bridge and it is fire! I mean it, he is amazing on it. Do you see where I'm going with this? I predict it will be like lighting jet fuel under the new release," I pause to take a breath. "I know I just talked for a long time."
He looks serious as he peers over his glasses at me. I feel confident in my idea, but I also want to disappear. "Lily, I value your opinion. This is an interesting strategy, and I think it may work. Either way, it won't hurt us. Good publicity won't put the next comeback at risk. For the next steps, I think I will put our marketing team on this tas. We have some savvy social media experts that can deliver."
I am pleased that our meeting went well, but I'm also happy when it is over. I put on my big girl pants today, and I'm pleased that I could make a positive contribution. When I leave the office, I shut the door quietly behind me and lean against the wall taking in a long breath.
I would really love some whiskey right now.
