"Are you sure you have everything? You know you are always forgetful! Seriously, did you have to bring that stuffed animal with you?"
Kyra pointed to my cat stuffed animal that I clutched in my arms. We stood at the airport terminal, my bags already checked but I held onto my carry-on and my stuffed animal.
"What? I am going to be gone for months and I will miss my sweet Flower Boy, so I had to bring something to ease my pain. It looks just like him!" I pushed the stuffed animal into her face, making kissing noises.
She slapped it away and I laughed. I always knew how to annoy her.
"Whatever, whatever! Don't forget that I am coming in a month, and I expect to hear about everything that happens, so you better call me frequently!" She pointed at me sternly.
"Of course, I will not forget about you." She nodded and I smiled. "Because I have to check in on my Flower Boy. You better take care of my precious baby!"
She sneered at me.
"Of course, I will call you all the time. What am I going to do without my best friend?" I started to feel my anxiety coming to the surface. I was about to fly across the globe to a place where a different language was spoken (even though I knew Korean), the culture was so different (even though I loved their culture), and here I was, some biracial curly haired girl who is going to try and be unnoticeable in the background. Who was I kidding?! This wasn't going to work!
"Let's go back home." I clutched my animal and headed the opposite direction. I almost got to the door before Kyra turned me around, clutching my arms.
"Sari! Pull yourself together! What are you doing?"
"I can't do this anymore. This is going to be a disaster."
"Are you kidding me? We have planned this for a year and now you want to back out? No. I think not."
"I. Am. Not. Going." I struggled against her hold, but she held fast. We were tugging and pulling, screaming and wresting.
"Stop it!" I screeched, grabbing at her arms that held me in neck grip, her hand pulling my hair. I managed to reach up and push at her head.
"You stop it! You're getting on that plane!"
"Ahhhhh!" we both yelled and suddenly we were aware of a silence around us. Still in our awkward positions, we looked up. Everyone was staring at us. We bolted apart, straightening our clothes.
Kyra patted her hair and I straightened my shirt, people shaking their heads at us as they walked by. We looked at each other silently, then the laughter bubbled forth and soon we were laughing our heads off.
"Come on now, Sari. You aren't going to pass up this opportunity to live out your dream. You are going to see how your dramas are made! You are going to see the fun of your bingeworthy dramas in person! You are going to eat all the convenient store instant ramen and spicy rice cakes," she started to steer me toward the entrance to the terminals. "and most important of all, you are going to be able to meet all of your swoon worthy k-drama heroes. Yeah, that's right, all of your sexy actors are going to be close enough to smell." She waved her hands as if we could smell something tasty. "Come on, you have studied and studied about Korean Culture and became the most famous kdrama writer in this generation and you are going to back out now?"
I closed my eyes and imagined it! Yes! Yes! Yes! I can see all of my favorite hot actors swimming before my eyes. I could practically feel the drool leaving my mouth.
I opened my eyes and Kyra was shaking her head in bemusement. She knew my weak spots. I smirked.
"So, you have paid attention when I forced you to watch those dramas during our sleepovers."
