Chapter 1
It was just supposed to be a simple 'apprehend a suspect who had explosives and was going to use them to blow up a ship' case. The whole team was in position to catch the suspect. It was going well, until a bomb went off, And Callen was knocked out by the explosion's effects. And he didn't wake up.
The blast's force had caused him to hit the back of his head really hard. He was put in a coma until the swelling had gone away.
A week later
'What's up Sam?' Deeks asked when he and Kensi had entered the bull pen.
'Actually very good.' Sam replied.
'In what way?' Kensi asked.
'Got a call from Hetty. She says there's a good chance Callen will wake up today!'
'That's incredible! How did Hetty sound on the phone?' Deeks asked.
'Cheerful. And hopeful.'
Deeks and Kensi looked at each other with worry. Callen being in a coma had been very hard on Hetty. (Eric said she looked like she wanted to faint when she heard the news that Callen had been badly injured and taken to the hospital). They understood completely. Given that Callen was very special to Hetty.
The whole week, Hetty had been spending as much time at the hospital as she could, desperate to be there when he woke up. When she was at the office, she tried not to look worried. But the agents knew she was just trying to hide her worry.
Then Eric whistled. Time to get to work.
At the hospital
Anna had gone to the bathroom to catch a breather. She was sitting with Callen when Hetty had to be at work. (Not exactly by choice, because if she hadn't offered to stay with him, Hetty would practically LIVE at the hospital until Callen woke up.) But she was glad to do it. Because she and Callen were dating, and she was attracted to him. And was happy to be with him when his 'mother' couldn't.
After washing up, she went back to Callen's room. She looked at him and thought:
'He looks so peaceful when he's asleep like that, wish he would wake up though.'
She held his hand, hoping he would squeeze it. Then Callen started to move very slowly. Then he groaned, and opened his eyes.
'Callen? Are you awake?'
At OPS
'You okay, Eric?' Nell asked her partner who looked worried.
'Yeah. Um. Just, just thinking', Eric sheepishly answered.
'About Callen?' Nell asked.
'Yes. Like, is he going to wake up today? They said he would wake up yesterday, but he obviously didn't. Now I'm wondering if he'll wake up at all, Then there's Hetty being so worried about him, the only time she even leaves his side is when anna shows up! And and, I'm rambling, aren't I?!' Eric rambled out.
'Yes, you were rambling.' Nell said as she assured her very worried partner. 'But your worries are legit. Callen might not wake up today, Hetty tries her best to hide her worries when she IS at work, but it's pretty obvious she's worried. But, we're doing no good to ourselves and the team by worrying like this. All we can do is wait.'
Then the phone rang.
'This is Eric.'
'Eric! This is Anna. I've been trying to reach Hetty, but have been unsuccessful'.
'Um. Why are you trying to reach Hetty?' asked Eric.
'Callen is awake!'
'What? Oh my gosh! That's so amazing! I'll, I'll try to find Hetty and tell her. She's going to be so happy!'
'No! You have to tell her something before she reaches the hospital!'
'What?'
'Callen has amnesea. He doesn't remember anyone on the team. If Hetty gets to him, he won't remember her!'
Hetty had gone to see Keane when she got the call from Callen's doctor that he had woken up. After the doctor had said the words:
'Mr. Callen is awake.'
She ran out of the door as fast as she could to her car and sped off to the hospital. For an entire week, she had been worried out of her mind waiting for him to wake up.
'I've lost agents before, but I CANNOT lose Callen!', She told herself day after day he had not woken up. If it wasn't for Anna insisting to satay with him during the day, she would never had left his side. Course, she still popped in on lunch break.
After parking her car, Hetty ran to Callen's room. 'Mr. Callen!' She called out to him.
Callen looked at her.
'Who are you?'
Eric had called the agents about Callen and his condition, and urging them to reach Hetty and to tell her what to expect from Callen. They were at the boatshed when they got the call. Sam told Deeks and Kensi to go, insisting he and Fatima had it from there.
They tried calling Hetty, but no answer. Then they remembered Callen's doctor would tell her if there was any changes in Callen's condition, so, they raced to the hospital, hoping to catch Hetty.
They raced up to Callen's room.
'I'm sorry, but Mr. Callen is in no condition to talk to anyone right now.' His doctor said.
'What are you talking about? He can't have amnesea! Let us in, he'll recognize us!' Deeks said.
'Mr. Callen DOES have some amnesea. And a visitor was already here.'
'That visitor, wouldn't happen to be a tiny but extremely vicious lady, was it?' Deeks asked.
'She was small all right. Well, Callen didn't recognize her, and, she didn't take it well. Kept insisting he knew her, she got very loud when I told her that a small case of memory loss wasn't uncommon with a coma caused by an head injury. I think she even looked like she wanted to cry. I told her to stop upsetting our patient, but she wouldn't listen. I had to have her escorted out, she then ran out of here. That's all I know.'
'Do, you know when Callen will regain his memory?' Kensi asked.
'No, I do not'. The doctor answered.
Kensi and Deeks then called the rest of the team, urging everyone to find Hetty.
'She must be so upset right now! Kensi said. 'It's been a whole week, and he wakes up and can't remember her! She must be heartbroken!'
'I bet, baby, I bet'. Deeks said.
