Which species has a soulmate:
Only a select few species have soulmates. This is because the fates wanted to give the lower-ranking species a choice. The ones with higher magic would go mateless if they weren't previously paired.
The ones that have soulmates are Werewolves, Dragons, Vampires, Angels, Witches, and Elves.
If a person is not a part of one of these species then they can not have a mate unless it is one of these. Example: a human can not have a human soulmate but can have a vampire one.
How to complete mating for each species:
It all starts with skin-to-skin contact after they turn 21. You can spend years knowing and talking to your mate but if you don't ever touch, it doesn't start the bonding process.
Each species has a different way to complete the bond.
Werewolves- a bite on the neck
Dragons- branding with their select power (fire or ice mark)
Vampires- drink their blood
Angels- a kiss on the mouth
Witch- a "love potion"
Elves- the transference of power
Note: Only Elves can mate with each other.
What a soulmate means to the species:
Werewolves and Dragons- Since they are very possessive no one is allowed to touch their mate. They always want to be near them and feel calm when they are around. They can feel each other's feelings and know if their partner is being unfaithful.
Vampires- They are a source of food. Some people take it seriously while others could care less. Their mate's blood becomes the only blood that tastes good and all others with taste bland. Their mate's blood will also give them more energy than others would.
Angels- They are very job-oriented and most of the time live all the time without meeting there's unless they are another angel. They barely go on land let alone touch other people so meeting a mate for an angel is rare. If they do meet their mate they have two options, life with them or give them up. This contradicts the purpose of the mates but the archangels don't seem to care.
Witches- They cherish their soulmates. They will love them no matter what amount of power they possess. When their mate is around it is easier to concentrate and make the best potion. They can use the power of the other if necessary and make it their own.
Elves- They are another one that rarely meets their mates unless they are part of the same kind. Elves can only have soulmates that are the same species as them because their powers are too much for most species to handle. They love their mates but don't get upset if they don't have one.
What each species call their soulmates:
Wolves and Dragons- Mates
Vampires- Companion/ partner
Angels- soulmate
Witches- lover
Elves- lifeline
Authors note:
I know other people set up their soulmates differently and that is why I'm clarifying. If you have questions feel free to ask or if you have any ideas, I'm open to them too. I just want you to know that everything I decide for this world has a reason.
There is a reason only certain species have mates or why Elves only mate with each other. These reasons could be setups for other books or my own logic of what the species are like. Werewolves are going to be the hardest to talk about because everyone does them differently.
Also, I'm still trying to understand the best way to portray Vampires so things might change. If anyone would like to help me come up with a system that would be great.
