I wake up in a clean white room, wrapped in paper sheets. My eyes glance around and stop at a tall young woman standing next to my bed, dressed in a doctor outfit. I sigh as I realize that I'm sitting In a hospital bed, too sore to move. "Well it's about time that you woke up." I hear my doctor say loudly and I turn to her. "I'm doctor Melissa Murry. It's a pleasure to finally meet you Dakota." She says in a smiley voice and I just stare. "Why am I here?" I croak, although I already know the answer. "You were brought in in the middle of the night, the people said that you had been almost kidnapped, and been knocked out trying to defend yourself. It's honestly not that bad, just a broken nose, couple of fractured ribs and tons of bruises and cuts." I nod weakly as my eyes wander down to my pale purplish skin. "The people who brought you in also brought in another boy, Jayden Halls. I'm not sure of you knew him but if you did than I can assure you that he's alright too. Just a broken arm and some scrapes." I look back up at the doctor and try to speak again but find it a struggle to breath. I desperately claw at the sheets, willing myself to sit up and breath but the doctor pushes me back. "Woah there, just rest. It's going to be hard to breath in a lot of air for a couple days, but you'll be fine. We were actually just working on getting you discharged. Your clothes are on the end of the bed so you can change, do you think you'll need help?" She asks but I shake my head and snatch my shorts and tee up to work on putting them on.
"Okay honey lets just step out here, ooh ooh watch that!" Jason's mother says as i trip over a rock and land on my face. I sigh and push myself up, feeling a new forming bruise on my cheek. "You've gotta be more careful." Jason's mother states and takes my arm again, helping me into the house. I smile in gratitude and head upstairs, telling her that I can manage myself. After putting some stuff away in my room, I curiously peek into Jason's room to find that he's nowhere in sight. I start to turn away to find Mrs. Adeelia looking at me, almost sad. "He's not here." She says and I look at her confusedly, biting my lip. "The police thought it'd be a good idea to keep him in a cell for a day before we bailed him out. The other kid, Andrew, he was put in there too until his parents could come." My eyes widen as I put a hand over my mouth. "Now honey don't you be freakin' yourself out, they're all fine. We can go see them if you like-" I interrupt her by putting my hand on her arm and nodding frantically. "Alright let's go then." She says, smiling slightly and leading me down to the door.
"Jason!" The cop yells sternly, pounding on a door. "You've been in the bathroom for over five minutes now, plus you got visitors!" He yells and pounds on the door once more. "Ive seen him already and k got some errands to run, so I'll come back for you in about an hour. Here's the money if they let you discharge him, if they do and y'all get out early than have Jason call me and I'll pick y'all up." Jason's mother whispered to me and I nod, brushing my hair away from my black eyes, due to the broken nose. The cop, a couple years older then me, looks at my face and then all my bruises and shakes his head. "You know, I wouldn't beat you If you were with me, instead of this delinquent." I instantly blush and look away "we're not dating, me and Jason, and he didn't even do this." The cop shrugs "whatever you say babe." He says and winks, and then saunters off. "He'll be out in a minute," he calls back lazily to me, walking into his office. I sigh and look down when a raspy voice says to me, "why the long face Dakota?" I glance up and see Jason leaning up against the wall, arms crossed and a smirk plastered on his face. "Jason." I breath out, smiling. "How've you been sunshine?" He says, chuckling and I let a laugh out, brushing my hair away from my face. Jason's happy expression suddenly turns to a stony glare, as he looks at my face and then at all of the bruises on the rest of my body. "If I had saw how bad he got you, then I would have killed him right there, no matter if I went to jail or anything." He mutters and I bite my lip. "Jason I'm so sorry. This whole thing is my fa-" He interrupts me suddenly, "don't you dare say that. It wasn't your fault at all, none of it. Don't you dare ever say that again." I nod and he grins. "good that." I nod and open my mouth to say something but the young police officer comes back out and Jason's eyes lock on him in a sharp glare, before he pulls my curtly to his chest. "woah there buddy, you haven't been bailed yet, so you're still considered a criminal." The officer glares, and Jason just rolls his eyes. I slip away from Jason and stand nearer to the cop, which makes Jason grit his teeth but I ignore it. "Speaking of still being a criminal, how can we bail him out?" The cop turns to me. "You need the money." i pull out a wad of cash that Jason's mother handed me. "this enough?" The cop grabs the money and motions me to his office, counting it. He finally nods and calls out the door to Jason, "Okay pack up your stuff and meet us out front, you're going home." I watch Jason walk into a back room and then start to head out to the front to wait but the cop grabs my wrist and yanks me back into the office, licking his lips. He pulls me closer, whispering "Hey, just cause he's going home don't mean you gotta." He chuckles and I kick him in the gut, twisting out of his grip. He grunts and grips the table, leaning on it while I glare at him. "Okay, or you can do that. Well if you decide to change your mind, I'll be here." He grins at me and slips a small paper with is number on it into my hand, causing me to glare harder at him. "Yeah, don't count on it." He rolls his eyes and I walk out of the office to where Jason is waiting for me, smile on his face and his eyes sparkling. How could this sweet boy ever be considered a tyrant? I wondered as I walked to him. "Hey." Jason greets me, a warm smile on his face. "Your mom said to call her of you got out early, like before she was back or something." He grins and nods "I should probably do that then." He steps outside and I follow as he dials a number into his phone. "Ma? Yeah, it's Jason. Can you come pick us up at the station? Yeah, yeah, great thanks bye." He rushes and hangs up and I chuckle. "I guess that was a yes." I ask and he nods. A few minutes later while Jason and I were talking Mrs. Adeelia's bright blue minivan pulls in wildly and we get in, Jason climbing into the front seat after helping me into the back. She drops us off at their house, muttering something about errands that she still needed to run and then she took off, the rubber black tires kicking up dirt like a horse in a race as she drove away. I started to the house but Jason pulled me back to him. "Let's go do something fun, how 'bout?" I shrug and he looked around. "Let's go to a dance club." He finally said and grinned and I looked at him uncomfortably. "Uh you can but I'm not much of a dancer, plus I suck at it so um I don't think I'll go," I mumble and he pouts. "Please?" He says and makes a puppy-dog face. I sigh and giggle a little. "Fine I guess I'll come." little had I known that I had just made the worst decision I had made in a long time, and there were definitely more to come after it.
