"Why do I have to go!!!" I complained.
"Because it's the law!" Jason laughed.
"Can't I just pretend to be sick!" I whined again. I didn't want to go back to school, I will undoubtedly get attacked by angry teachers and janitors and Drew. Oh god, Drew. I can't tell you how many times he called me over the weekend. I'm his main victim and usually during the weekend he comes to see me just to make sure I don't get all confident if he doesn't pick on me for two days. Like that would happen.
"C'mon we're going to be late," Jason says with a chuckle. He apparently thinks it's funny that I want to live the rest of my life at home with a book.
As I stepped out of the car a cool breeze hit me and I remembered, today was the last week of school before Christmas break. I could not be happier. I just hope drew would leave me alone until January, you know in spite of the holidays. But once I stepped into the school and Drew's tall silhouette started to stroll over to me, that hope vanished.
"Dear, I was wondering where you've been. You know I came over to your house on Saturday, but your uncle said you weren't staying there any longer. He was too drunk to tell me where you were staying, but I imagine you can tell me?" Forget it. I wasn't about to tell this jerk my whereabouts every second of every day.
"That- that's none of your business." I stuttered, trying to move back even though my legs were frozen to the floor. Now, I may really sound like a wimp, but I am not sure of all the nasty things this boy can do, and I just stood up to him.
So yes, I stood there in the middle of the hallway, shaking like an idiot, when Drew leaned down and whispered, "Oh sweetie, it's always my business." With that, he took my backpack, turned it upside down, and shook everything out of it onto the ground, before he left for class. I kneeled down and cried.
"Hey, hey it's okay. Don't let him get to you. I'll protect you. Forever and always." Jason gently said. I'd forgotten he was there. I lifted my head up just enough to wipe my eyes. "You mean it?"
"I mean it. I swear on the River Styx."
After I had gotten everything cleaned up, Jason walked me to class. We had the same one, actually we had a lot of the same classes. I'd never even noticed. As we stepped into class, we got an evil glare from the teacher -and drew for that matter- but we just sat down and got to work. The class passed quickly, as did all the rest. Drew messed with me a couple times, but mainly backed off when Jason was around. It felt nice to have a friend, but I was concerned for him.
"Jason, you really shouldn't hang around me all the time." I said while we were walking to his house.
"Why, do you not like having me around?" He asked with traces of hurt in his voice, "because I'll just hit the road then, but-"
"No Jason, I love having you around. I love your family and you're awesome. But at school, when drew attacks, because you're with me, you'll get targeted too. I don't want that."
"Oh duckling, you have so much to learn about me. Don't I'll be fine." Jason responded.
"You sure?" I questioned with a hint of relief.
"I'm positive." Jason grinned.
As we ran through the front doors of Jason's house he yelled, "I win!" I laughed, out of breath. "Oh whatever,"
Jason led me to the kitchen and I looked around confused. "Is it dinner already?" I asked.
"No, don't you have an after school snack when you get home?" Jason asked, like everyone in the world did this strange thing.
"Nope, I only ate when it was breakfast, lunch, or dinner."
Jason's mouth hung open, "Okay, well you get to choose then. What do ya want?" Jason questioned.
"Uh whatever you want," I said hoping that he would just pick.
And to my luck, he did. "I was hoping you'd say that." Jason reached for a box and as he flung it out to me he said, "The amazing, best, most excellent food ever.......... Cheezy-O's!!!"
I quickly applauded, laughing as he bowed and wiped away fake tears. He then got bowls down and poured the cheesy snack food into the two bowls. Then he took me into the living room and turned on his x-box.
"Umm what do you want to play?" He asked, distractedly flipping through disks. "Anything is fine," I said with a shrug. Jason put in a two-player car racing game, and we raced again and again while eating his favorite food then and again.
"Like it?" Jason asked after a bit of time.
"Yeah. I could get used to having this fun thing." Laughing, we continued to play.
