It wasn't a particularly unusual day when you realized you were head over heels for your best friend. All of the day's activities seemed to be moving along in the usual smooth order, up until after dinner when the boys, Lily, and yourself were studying in the library.
You were sitting at one of the long tables in the middle of the room next to James, working on a potions essay that was due in a couple of days when James suddenly goes stiff next to you.
Pulling your gaze away from your parchment, you look up at the tense boy, and followed his stare towards Lily and Remus across the table. The two of them had been practicing their charms when Remus had accidentally levitated and dropped his ink on the table where it began to drip onto Lily's lap. This scenario wasn't particularly unusual except for the fact that both your friends were now laughing hysterically and Lily's hand had made its way to Remus's arm.
Giggling and standing up to get a towel, Lily looked at Remus's embarrassed face and said, "Don't worry about it. You may be clumsy but at least you're cute."
A pang of some unknown emotion shot through you as your stomach dropped. Looking back at James, you realized both of you had taken on a similar expression. James met your eyes, but his face changed as he noted your rigid response to the encounter the two of you had just observed. Feeling like you were suddenly being analyzed, you quickly looked away and started packing your parchment and quill into your bag.
"I think I'm going to turn in for the night, I'm not feeling quite well. Goodnight everyone," you say swiftly, not giving yourself a chance to see if anyone asked if you were ok.
You started to make your way down the halls and towards the stairs as you realized your heart was beating loudly. You turned into a side corridor and leaned up against the wall to catch your breath to let your heart rate slow
What in the world has gotten into you? Why do I feel like I want to throw up? Why can't I stop thinking about Remus blushing?
"I saw that!"
You jump, startled from the sudden intrusion of your thoughts. James looked at you with an accusing glare on his face.
You didn't give him time to make a follow-up remark as you say, "I have no clue what you're talking about," and started to resume your walk back to the dorms.
James came up behind you, hot on your heels, and said, "You know exactly what I'm talking about, don't play dumb. I saw you!"
You let out an exasperated sigh. "Truly James, I have no idea what you're talking about. One minute I was fine and the next minute, I started to not feel good. That's all there is to it."
