The First Day

The first day of school was always sort of an exciting day for me, most kids go to school with the same kids since kindergarten so when you're the new girl you quickly become a fan favorite. Of course, this is not always the case, sometimes it means you're just an outsider and you won't be making any friends anytime soon.

This morning I'll be getting on the bus at 7:43, it is currently 7:15 and I'm ready to go, guess I was just too excited. I decide to take the time to make myself a nice breakfast, it is the most important meal of the day, and the pathetic banana I ate will not cut it.

Excited about your first day?

Stevie J. 🎸
Yeah, a little nervous though, you'll be on the bus before me, right?

Bug 🐜
Yes, and I'll save you a seat
I promise

By the time I've finished my breakfast and packed my lunch, it's time to head to the bus stop. It feels nice outside, not all moist and icky, there are two other kids at my stop but I stand a few feet away from them to avoid an awkward conversation. I decide to count the number of blue roofs in my neighborhood, out of fear of putting in my headphones and missing the bus, when I get to 8 the bus pulls up and I enter last. I got a lot of stares, some shocked gasps, but mostly silence. I scan the bus for a familiar face when Anthony pops out of a seat near the middle

"Over here"

As if it wasn't obvious, I cautiously take a seat beside him. There's a group of boys hovering over our seat just staring at me like they've never met a girl before.

"Hi I'm Zach, these two idiots are Marcus and Leo, and it seems you already know our boy, Anthony"

" I'm Stevie, I know Ant from camp"

I turned back around in my seat and was shocked to feel an arm around me. I looked to my left and Anthony smiled at me. Desperate to remove myself from the awkward situation, I grabbed my phone out of the top pouch of my backpack and scrolled through Instagram.  I tried not to think about how he smelled like expensive cologne, like patchouli and citrus. I also tried not to overthink the meaning of his arm being around me, maybe it's a friendly thing, maybe he thought it would comfort me.

At the next stop a girl walked onto the bus and gave me a nasty look, at another stop a set of twins came in and sat at the very front, finally, we pulled into the bus ramp and entered our school. It was an average middle school beige lockers, brick walls, and a hoard of grumpy children, I guess not everyone is as enthusiastic about the first day as I am.  Anthony led me to a table in the cafeteria while his friends went to go get breakfast

" So we'll have homeroom first, and you'll get your schedule from your teacher, don't worry you're in my homeroom...it goes by last names"

I nodded.

" Why are you so quiet this morning? Did you get enough sleep last night?"

It was sweet that he cared, but if I did the talking then eventually the question would've slipped out and I couldn't risk losing my only friend on the first day over something so silly.

" Just taking it all in I guess, your friends seem nice"

" Yeah they're cool, not cooler than you though...ahh there's that smile I was looking for "

I'm glad his friends came back at that moment, if not he might've caught me blushing, and maybe I would've said something irrational. As soon as his tray hits the table, Zach starts interrogating me, asking me questions like where I'm from, what my parents do, why I moved, why Anthony's never mentioned me before. I have an answer to every question except the last, I started to wonder the same but then I remember that I never talked about Anthony after that summer either, only mentioning making a friend when my parents picked me up at the end of summer. Before I get deep in thought, the bell rings and Anthony is pulling me to a classroom, outside of the door is the number 212, when we enter there is a tall blonde lady with green eyes who looks more like a model than a teacher

"Hi Mrs. Johnson, you have a new student, this is Stevie Jackson"

She shook my hand and asked me some questions, when she got all the information she needed, she handed me my schedule and told me if I needed anything I could come to her, I took a seat near the back of the class next to Anthony who immediately snatched my schedule to compare it to his.

" Looks like we'll have every class together except the last one, you have theater and I have orchestra"

Hopefully, we don't end up hating each other by the middle of the year, or else school would be hell.

" Great, is the theater teacher nice? And do you know anyone else who has that class"

" She's nice, a bit of a wild card, I don't know anyone in that class but you could always switch into orchestra with me"

As nice of a gesture as it was, I knew nothing about music and I had a lot of fun at a theatre camp I went to four summers ago, so maybe the class would be fun too. Maybe I'll make a new friend and then I won't have to bother Anthony so much.

The bell rang, and it was time to go to first period, we had ELA which is simple, then science, and then gym which was my least favorite class. After that, we had Spanish which was very funny, and then lunch. I had been looking forward to lunch all day. We met at the same table from that morning and recapped our day so far. I met some new people and gave my chocolate milk to Anthony who practically begged me for it, in exchange for it he gave me a chocolate chip cookie so I guess it was a fair trade. The rest of the day was a blur and honestly boring.

After school, I loaded onto the bus with Anthony and his friends, this time he didn't put his arm around me so I leaned my head on his shoulder and he let me. The ride seemed short, and he got off before I knew it. When I made it home, the house was empty, my parents left some money for pizza and a note saying they had a work dinner and would be back later. I pocketed the money and decided I would eat the leftover pasta from last night. After I made it upstairs and showered I got a FaceTime call from Anthony, he wanted to know how my day was - even though he spent the majority of the day with me. We stayed on the phone until well after my bedtime, and when we finally said goodnight, I drifted off into a peaceful slumber, and I dreamed of a certain curly-headed boy with a smile that could light up a room.
