I Can Cry If I Want To

Suddenly the door swings open to reveal a very dark foyer.

"Suprise"

The lights come on and I see that I'm surrounded by faces, Miguel, Sam, Zach, Lia, a lot of other people I don't know the names of but who I met in school, but no Anthony.

"Happy birthday Stevie"

I am suddenly hugged from behind by who I can only imagine is Anthony, I turn around in his arms to give him a real hug, after a few more seconds we break away.

"You didn't have to do all of this"

"You deserve it"

I'm suddenly pulled into an even bigger hug by someone significantly taller than me

"Happy birthday Steven"

Miguel.

"I thought I told you to stop calling me that"

He repeated my sentence mockingly before handing me a small gift bag

"Thank you, Miguel"

"Don't mention it"

After making my rounds, thanking everyone for their birthday wishes, and getting to know everyone I make my way to the deck where a few people are playing cards and others are talking. I take a seat next to Zach, across from Anthony, and join in.

"Are you enjoying your party, Stevie?"

"Yeah it's really nice, I wasn't expecting it all"

"I wish my boyfriend threw me surprise parties"

I exchanged an awkward glance with Anthony, assuming he would correct her but after a while, the conversation just kinda moved on weird right?

They soon started to discuss memories from sixth grade and I was very lost so I decided to go back into the kitchen to find something to drink. While in there, I noticed Sam and Miguel sitting in the dining room laughing and decided to join.

" Is it ok if I sit in here for a while, it's so loud out there"

Sam motioned for the chair across from her so I took a seat.

" Not to push or anything, but it seems like you have something on your mind, do you want to talk about it?"

Yes. But is it even appropriate to ask for her help in this situation, either way, I would like to talk to someone and she's offering.

"Yeah, I do actually"

"Well lay it on us then"

"Well I guess, I kinda have a thing for Anthony"

"No way, you like little Larusso?"

The sarcasm led me to believe that my feelings were obvious.

"Stop it, Miguel, I figured something was going on there I just wasn't sure"

"That's the thing, I don't know if there's something there"

"Well, Anthony is hard to read, he's a man of very few words and he doesn't tell me anything...but, from what I've observed, he seems to really like being around you and he seems happy, he's never thrown a birthday party for anyone before so that's something"

" Coming from a boy who was once Anthony's age, we're pretty dumb and he's probably equally confused as you are"

"Thank you"

"Don't mention it"
