There have always been four huts in the thick jungle, one for each brother. There should've been only four, Esidesi tells himself. He counts them again. Why are there five?

He doesn't want to face the obvious answer, to look towards the unwilling spouse of his older brother as the answer, so he counts them again instead, sure that his mind is playing tricks on him. One, two, three, four... Five.

Oh, well, maybe that's just a second house for Kars, or new food storage! Silly him, there's no way he'd let the marine actually live alongside them! Oh, Esidesi, he let anxiety get the best of him for nothing!

Now, that's what he wants to convince himself. He really wants to believe that that isn't a new house made specifically for that damn woman, but it's hard to do that when he actively watched her go inside and collapse onto the bed.

Kars would wait outside like the mutt he's treated as, patiently waiting for permission to be let in as he chatted with her just beyond the doorway.

Honestly, this wouldn't be happening if he never had a big head. Esidesi thinks back to when they weren't exiled from their homeland Maidou, when all was good and well, and they hadn't to take a moment to actually have a care in the world.

Kars was the eldest son of the chief, with Esidesi, Wamuu, and Santana following right behind. As the eldest, he was naturally always in public eye, always wanted and desired for one thing or another.

Around the time they were banished, perhaps a bit before, it became apparent that Kars was due to take over as ruler, though any good monarch shouldn't take a throne without a spouse. Being as pampered and spoiled as he was, he wouldn't settle for anything less than the idea of the 'perfect woman', and would constantly wave off any suggestions for stupid reasons.

One girls nose was a bit crooked, another girl was too short; some were too big or too small, others too obedient or too wild. There was always too much of one or not enough of another.

And then came along a girl that looked to be the very definition of 'perfect', fitting every criteria to a T as though she was practically made for him; and yet he still had something to say, and even though she was everything he wanted, the greedy bastard still sought for more.

Though he ended up wishing a bit too big, wanting a bit too much, and in his extreme avarice, he and his brothers ended up losing everything in the end.

It was an accident. An accident, they swear! The islands priest only happened to piss them off a bit too much, and they were sure they could get away with killing him, but how could they? That was the link to their gods they killed, the peacekeeper between worlds! They only meant to hurt him a little bit; Yes, he was a frail old man, they didn't expect him to break so easily!

Sent off tied to a boat and left to drift at the mercy of the sea, the four brothers eventually washed up on the island they lived at currently, and rebuilt their life the best they could with their few skills.

The rest of the story wrote itself. They grew and adapted, living just fine as they pretended their exile never happened.

However peachy and dandy they lived, things happened to change as soon as (Y/n) washed up. At first, the brothers swore it was that girl that Kars dismissed, that 'perfect one', though she didn't much look anything like her. Different clothes, different attitude-- it was the same, yet entirely different girl.

This, Kars unfortunately claimed, must've been his chance at redemption! The gods must've forgiven him and pitied his loss, and gave him just one thing that could make him feel like he still had a place, a reason in this world! He surely wouldn't pass up this chance!

That led to now, where he constantly doted and smothered (Y/n) with every chance he got, hoping to win her over so he could have that happiness he was robbed of.

"This is fine." She said, gesturing for him to come inside as she looked around. "I'm surprised you put something together like this so quickly."

"It's customary where I'm from that the women get their own quarters separate from their spouses."

"People don't sleep together?"

"No, they do. It's like a house they have simply because, mostly given to them as a sign of promise and power from their betrothed."

"Interesting. You're not sleeping with me, though."

"As long as your comfy, I'd be happy to sleep on a plain of hot coal." Kars smiled.

"That won't be necessary. The floor will be fine for you."

Almost beaming at the thought, Kars settled onto the ground at the foot of the bed, happily staring up at (Y/n) through the light of the dimming sunset that peeked through the windows. He's not gonna mess up this time, he'll do everything in his power not to lose it all again.

He won't mess up.
