She was a head taller than I, dark skinned with the looks of a grounder. A sword strapped to her back and blood on her hands.
"Lincoln! She's alright. Little bruised but I unharmed." She called over her shoulder.
He emerged from the tree line out of breath. He crossed the space between us in moments and had me in his arms faster than I could process.
"Octavia? Are you ok? They're gone, they won't ever hurt you again." He pulled back from me a bit to look at my face and wipe the tears from my eyes.
"I hate seeing you cry." He said brushing away some of the free flowing tears I couldn't seem to stop.
"Yeah... So I'm gonna take care of the dead bodies over here, so you too can just... I don't know, make out of whatever." I had forgotten about the woman who saved me.
My voice shook and cracked on odd words as I said "Thank you for saving me." I was staring at the bodies. She had stabbed one through the chest and the other had its throat slit. I saw her start to drag one body away, into the brush away from where we stood.
"Asha it's very good to see you. I'm glad to know that your... alive. I guess that's the right word for it."
He shifted so he was holding me to his side. I still clutched at his jacket when he reached out to grasp this woman's arm.
"Yeah it's not everyday you see a familiar, face that doesn't want to rape and kill you." she replied out of breath as she heaved another body.
"Octavia, this is Asha, she lived in my village, until a year ago when she was banished, for speaking out of turn to our Commander." Lincoln said pressing his lips to the top of my head.
"That sounds like something she would do" I said.
I continued to stare as she dragged the other body, and threw it on top of each other. Then watched in bewilderment as she lit them on fire.
"Ok. Yeah that happened." She turned back to us. "My camps not far from here if you wanna crash with me for a while." She pointed in the direction behind her, past the flaming bodies. "Where ever you wanna go, just decide quick, that smell is not a very forgiving one."
"If it's no trouble" I found myself saying.
She turned to lead us back to our camp to gather our meager supplies.
I stumbled a bit at first and Lincoln swung me up into his arms.
"I can walk" I said stubbornly.
He looked down at me and I could see the fear in his eyes. He was afraid of loosing me.
"I know," he leaned down and pressed his lips to mine. I melted into his arms leaning deep into the kiss.
Asha turned around and smiled sweetly at us, "Lincoln?" She called as she turned back around "hows my sister?" She slowed he pace so he didn't have to shout.
"She's fine. Anya is doing good leading our people. I suspect you know about the sky people?"
"Of course I know about the sky people, they are all any tribe's been talking about. How the Commander herself might have gone to help her cousin if she thought she needed it."
Lincoln set me down next to the dying fire that we had abandoned, and started gathering our things. Suddenly I felt the nausea like a wave crashing down on me. This time I headed for the creek. There was nothing in my stomach to throw up, so I dry heaved into the riverbed.
This time Asha held my hair back, while Lincoln stood off to the side.
When I was done I sat back on my heels, delaying the inevitable. I would have to tell him soon.
