As the night grew old, the air in the club turned boisterous. The loud catcalls of the ego-tripping fools grated on my nerves, but before I reached my breaking point, Will switched the meeting to an empty room obscured in the back of the club.
There were only three chairs and a table in the room, and I couldn't figure out why Will called only Ivan and me for a meeting. When I looked at Will, he smirked, making my irritation skyrocket.
"Have you not humiliated me enough by updating my budding status on your social media group. Is it necessary to make me meet with this douchebag?" I threw a glowering glance at Ivan, who flew at me, but Will caught him.
" Oscar, cut it out. I know you are upset, but rules are rules. Respecting a contract is the heart of our job. You made a mistake, so try to live with it."
" I have principles, Will. I couldn't do it, but that is not disrespecting the contract." I spit out while he made Ivan sit on his chair away from me. Will sat in between us.
" Then what do you call not killing the target because it was a woman. And she was not a saint. She was trafficking little girls. I have principles too, Oscar. " Will glared at me.
I got transported back to that hell of a day a year and a half earlier.
Ivan and I were on a stakeout some distance down the street of a run-down house in east Las Vegas. The old honda accord we were in couldn't handle the scorching summer heat, and I was close to getting a heat stroke. I poured some water over my head to feel something cool on my skin.
It was that shitbag's job to get a car. And he brought that crumbling metal bin that sucked the life out of me in the desert.
While I was mentally kicking him, a movement across the road caught my eye. It was the black SUV of the man we were waiting for.
After three painstaking days of recon, I mapped our targets, a woman and a man, to that house. It was the perfect place for the hit devoid of any onlookers.
We were supposed to take out both of them and make it look like a lover's quarrel gone bad. A solid twenty minutes after the man went in, Ivan and I slowly moved towards the house.
That man didn't even lock the house, and when we entered the hallway, it was empty. For a moment, I thought they knew we were coming, but the loud moans from upstairs settled my suspicion.
We took the stairs trying not to make creaking noises on the old wooden floorboard. The hallway upstairs was narrow and had two rooms, one on the left and the other on the right. The moans were coming from the room towards the right. I hated having to team up with anyone for a hit. So it made me extra irritable that it was that idiot Ivan I had to team up with.
But for the hit's sake, I swallowed my annoyance, and when we were outside the door, I motioned for him to cover me and busted in. The scene inside made me throw up internally.
The things people did in the name of kinks these days.
The woman was naked on top of that man holding a whip tied around the man's neck in a tight grip. It took a moment for them both to realize an actual person was standing behind them with a gun.
The woman's hands started to shake when she saw me. She got off the man and stood before me naked, shivering in fear. And it was a perfect shot.
But both my hands on the trigger froze. For a man who had been a hitman for more than a decade with twenty-two perfect hits, it was a life-altering moment. Because I couldn't pull the trigger.
Also, I forgot about the man on the bed. I still couldn't figure out how long I stood there, confronted with a moral dilemma. But then the sudden blast of a gun brought me out of my reverie. Ivan took out the man who had a gun in his hand, which he took out from under the bed.
Ivan motioned for me to shoot the woman, who started to beg not to shoot her. The instant I hesitated, she deftly picked the pistol from the dead man's hand and pointed it at me. Even then, I couldn't pull the trigger, but in a second, she was on the ground as Ivan took her out.
When I came back to reality, Will focused his measured gaze on me while that bastard Ivan made a face behind Will's back. I scowled at his smirking face, but when Will turned to look at Ivan, he kept his face straight.
That childish idiot is supposed to be a hitman.
I sneered at Ivan when Will cleared his throat.
" Don't glare at me, Will. That idiot behind you is pulling funny faces at me. It's not my fault you have imbeciles working for you."
" That imbecile saved your life when you decided to take a moral high ground right in the middle of a hit, Oscar," Will grunted his disapproval.
Ivan was still laughing and making faces.
" Don't scold me, Will. Turn and see what he is still doing," I pointed my finger and glared at that laughing clown.
" Enough! you Idiots," Will's loud rumble made us both still. " I am done with this, he hit me, he laughed at me kindergarten non-sense. I still have some respect in this field, so don't you both sully it before I die."
I didn't say anything. It was all because of that immature cretin, Ivan. I was calling him names in my mind when Will said, " I called you both to discuss a hit. Should I proceed, or do you idiots still want to pull your hair."
" I am ready to discuss the hit," I mumbled and tried not to glare at Ivan.
" This is a high profile hit we have ever handled, and I am still not sure if I have to take it. Benjamin pulled some details regarding the target, and that's it. I don't have full facts yet. Everything regarding the hit was hush-hush, and I don't like it."
" I will do it," The words came out before I could stop it.
" It's a woman," Will declared it with raised brows.
" I will do it," I replied without hesitation when Ivan's chuckle broke the tension in the room.
" Enough, Ivan." Will barked, glaring at him.
Served the bastard right.
" He wouldn't be able to pull the trigger, as usual, so let me do it," Ivan said in a mocking tone, making me see red.
" I think I have to rethink my choices if you two fools are the best I have got. I said I don't have the full facts yet, Idiots." Will yelled, losing his cool.
" I will gather the facts then. Show me what Benjamin pulled so far," I said, seeing a chance at my redemption.
" Ivan, you don't want the job then?" Will asked.
" Let him do the fact-gathering. I will clean his mess when the time comes to pull the trigger," Ivan said, smirking at me.
" Don't over-inflate your ego, Ivan. It was Oscar who changed the gun in the evidence room when you foolishly forgot to leave it there instead of the target's gun. You both are equally useless, so stop this back and forth. I am sick of it. These are the details that Benjamin pulled," Will said, handing me the file on the table.
I opened the file and stopped breathing.
" The target is the sole heir to the Hampton Empire, Maddie Hampton," Will's words sounded like a death knell to my peace of mind.
