Chapter 6

"Hey, thank you for fixing the a/c.." You're sitting on the porch, watching John B change out the part on the A/C unit.

"You know I don't mind." He grabs a screwdriver out of his bag and begins tightening the part into place.

You subconsciously rub your small bump, drifting off in thoughts. You and John B. You had been best friends since elementary school and you never thought the two of you would be together romantically. What if something happens and you lose your best friend and lover at the same time?

"Hey, earth to Malwina." He gently taps your knee, sitting in the chair next to you, "What's on your mind?"

"We're together now.. What about the future?" You look at him.

"What do you mean? I mean I'm going to take care of you and the baby." He leans up in his chair, reaching over for your hand, "In whatever way I need too. I'll treat the baby as if it's my own."

You give a small smile, "You're going to have to learn to get along with Rafe." You laugh a little, squeezing his hand. "He's going to be there for everything, just like you."

John B frowns, looking at you confused, "What do you mean he's going to be there for everything?"

"He's the dad. I mean he's going to be there, John B."

John B lets go of your hand, standing, "After everything he's done, you're still going to let him be in your life?"

You nod, "Well yeah? Why wouldn't I? John B, he's the father of the baby. I can't just tell him he can't be a part of the baby's life."

"Um. Yes. Yes, you can tell him that you don't want him in its life." He runs his hand through his hair, "He's done nothing but hurt you and cause problems. He doesn't deserve to be in the baby's life."

You slowly stand. You never realized it would be an issue with John B. "John B. He's different now. He's changed and he's proved himself to me."

"So, that's just a free pass into the baby's life? How is that going to work, Malwina? All three of us co-parenting? That'll go over real well." He chuckles, shaking his head.

"Actually, yes that is what we'll do. People do it all the time and it works just fine. As a parent you have to put your differences aside for your child no matter what." Sighing you put your hand on his arm, "Come on, let's not argue about this right now. Okay? I'm exhausted and I have to get up early in the morning."

He sighs and nods, pulling you into his arms, "Why do you have to get up early in the morning?" He presses a kiss to your head as you wrap your arms around him.

"I have my first doctor's appointment tomorrow." You pull away smiling, "First one."

"What time? I'll go with you." He gently pushes a piece of hair behind your ear.

"Rafe is taking me.. He was the one who even told me about it."

John B pulls away from you, "Okay... well I'll go too."

"He's taking me shopping on the mainland after. I need a dress for the Midsummer's party."

"Why do you need a dress for the party? It's a kook thing." He furrows his eyebrows, "last time I checked you're a pogue-" Then he realizes, looking down at you, "You're his date."

"I mean, yes and no. He wanted me to go so I could properly meet his parents." You shrug a little. It's true, it was just a party, not a big deal.

"Meet his parents as his date, Malwina. You're going as his date, but we're together."
