He sat in the corner, as usual, waiting for the day to be done. Sometimes the days went slowly, other times, fast. It was a slow day. He watched Girl and Boy run across the room after having a breakfast of very sugary flakes in milk. He wondered why parents ever gave kids sugar? In his home, it was considered a very rare treat that was only taken on special occasions. It was basically a kid's version of that powdered drug humans made. It was unhealthy, made people have a "sugar high" and it comes in a powder form. He shook his head at Man and Woman's terrible parenting. He had only had sugar once and only about a tablespoon of it. Even then it gave him so much energy his mother eventually just told him to run laps around the house. He did twenty of them. A loud crash interrupted his thoughts and he opened his eyes to see dirt everywhere and the two children looking very guilty. Woman came rushing in.
"What happened, are you two okay!?"
Girl pointed at the spilled plant.
"W-we got too close to the plant."
Boy nodded.
"It was an accident."
Woman sighed tiredly. Woman worked a lot. She had a full-time job and had to watch the kids when Man was away. Woman worked very hard for little reward and she never tried to tell Man he had to watch the kids or took time off of her job to relax. He didn't understand it. She deserves a reward after all the hard work she's done, yet she doesn't try to stand up for herself. Humans, he had learned, simply accepted that something was what it was, and didn't try to change it. It made them weak. If she was a hybrid, she would be reading a book, while sipping lavender tea instead of cleaning up soil on the floor. He watched pitifully as Woman swept the dirt into a dustpan.
"Why don't you two go outside? Seems like you have a lot of energy today!"
The children squealed in delight and raced to the backdoor.
"Stay in the backyard!" Woman called after them.
She sighed again and pinched her nose. She looked like she had a headache. She probably did.
"I see the way you're looking at me, Ren. I'm not blind. I know you're not a clueless animal, like some people in my life."
He stared at her. He wasn't sure how to respond to that. He didn't think any humans would think anything higher of him and his species other than animals that happen to look a little like humans. Woman started pacing back and forth.
"Look I know you hate us, anyone with some common sense could see that."
He looked down.
"But, I just want you to know if it were up to me you would never have stepped foot in this house. We're all human here."
She laughed harshly.
"I suppose that would be an insult to call you human, considering everything we've done to you."
She looked him in the eyes.
"I don't expect you to just give up and live here forever. I know you have a plan to get out of here. I don't know how or when but I don't expect you to tell me of course."
She cleared her throat.
"I'll get to the point. If you need any help, escaping, or whatever. Tell me. I'll help any way I can."
She took a deep breath.
"Just... Please don't hurt my children. They may not act the best towards you but they don't know any better. That's all I ask." With that, she gave him a nod and walked off.
He sat there, shocked. He didn't know humans could be so... understanding? Kind? Intelligent? He didn't know. This certainly wasn't what he was taught as a child. Of course, most of the stuff he had been told were scary stories and rumors. "If you don't go to bed the humans will get you..."
