Chapter 18

Today was the day. We were going to activate the SPIRE but with the counteragent in it. Ben was sitting in the driver's seat of our car with me in the passenger seat. Matt and his team had insisted on coming with us no matter how much we tried to convince them not to. Matt, Woods, and Sam climb into the back seat. Sam was holding a smaller camera to record everything today. Ben drives to the location we had found that the SPIRE was in. I held onto my massive jar of counteragent tightly. Ben looks over me as he drives. He could tell I was nervous as he reaches over to gently grab my hand squeezing it. 

Upon arriving at the location, we all climb out of the car. We were going to have to find a way in so we quickly scope the building. I was the one who ended up coming across an open window. The others help me and Ben climb inside. Ben goes and opens a door to let the others in. I look around the area to see if I can find the SPIRE. I was able to locate it in the back corner of the location. 

"Over here" I call out as I walk closer to it. 

"Well done Y/N" I hear someone say as they start clapping.

I turn to see Nelson walk towards me. I grasp my jar tighter. Ben was the one who reached be first out of the crew. He quickly stops at the sight of Nelson. 

"Why are you here?" Ben growls pulling me close to him protectively. 

I could hear the steps of Matt, Sam, and Woods walking closer to us. I shake my head at them for them to stop. 

"Ah you brought your friends I see," Nelson says looking over to them. "Come on out" I watch as Matt walks closer to Ben and me while his team stays back. "Ah, Matthias! How nice to finally meet you" 

Matt nods slightly. Ben moves me to Matt before stepping in front of us. Matt takes the jar from me causing me to look at him. I watch as he hides it behind his back as has his team walk over to him. The jar gets transferred into Sam's bag hiding it. 

"Now let's get down to business shall we?" Nelson says as he pulls out a gun aiming it a Ben. "Give me the absolate" 

"He doesn't have it" I growl.

The gun moves over to me. Ben starts to step in front of me. 

"Come here" Nelson growls at me. 

I start to step forward but Ben grabs my arm. I look at Ben slightly "It's okay" I whisper to him before walking around him to head towards Nelson

"Good girl," Nelson says as he watches me pull the absolate from my pocket. 

"Stop" I hear someone yell. 

"Don't" Nelson growls looking towards who was yelling. "So nice of you to join us Deb"

Deb was here? I turn to see Deb walking towards us. Ben stood there in shock as he watched Deb walk closer. Matt, Sam, and Woods stared at Deb as well. However, there was something I could see in Ben's eyes that made me hurt. Admiration. Deb stopped in front of Ben looking at him. 

"She cured you?" Deb asked. 

"She did" Ben answered. 

"It's so nice to see your face again," Deb says grabbing Ben's face gently. 

I turn back towards the SPIRE as tears sting my eyes. Nelson leans down towards me. 

"He loves her you know" Nelson whispers to me. "Start the machine" 

At first, I hesitated but then I felt the barrel of the gun Nelson was holding press into my back. I put the absolate into the keyhole. Nelson tells me how to start it as I follow his direction. 

"Y/N" I hear Deb say behind me. "You start that machine you're dooming humanity"

"What do you know about humanity Deb?" I growl as I turn around. She was way too close to Ben for my comfort. I could see Sam walking to the machine at the corner of my eye with the jar of counteragent. "All you've ever done is hurt, people. You claimed to care for me but when I disappeared you didn't once question what happened to me. Instead, you get all cozy with my fiance." 

"Y/N" Deb says to me "It was never like that" 

Anger filled my mind as I stared at her. She still stood too close to Ben for my comfort. I watch Sam walk away with an empty container in her hand. I spin around and start the machine. 

"Good j-" Nelson starts to say until he sees the color of the serum inside the machine has changed. "What did you do?" 

I smile at him sweetly. "I started the machine just like you asked but you forgot I wasn't the only one in the room," Nelson growls putting the gun to my head in front of everyone. I continued to smile up at him despite the gun being pressed to my head. "Go ahead. Shoot me" I say to him. "At least I can die knowing I saved everyone around me. At least I'll know Ben will be well taken care of." I look over at him. "But I don't think you'll live very long if you kill me especially when Ben is very protective of the mother of his kid. Oh and he knows what you did to our first child."

Nelson growls as he cocks the gun. Nelson looks at me in the eyes as he puts his finger over the trigger. I could hear running coming towards us neither Nelson or I look to see who was running. It wasn't until Ben was in my view that I knew it was him. However the sound of the gun going off caused everyone to go silent. 

My breath leaves my lungs as pain floods into my shoulder. I look over at Ben who had tackled Nelson to the ground. More steps started to run towards me as I start to drop to the floor. Two pairs of arms grab me helping me to the floor gently. Deb and Matt both come into view. 

"Ben" Deb yells as she applies pressure to my shoulder. 

Ben looks over, his eyes widen at the sight of my blood seeping through Deb's fingers. Ben grabs Nelson's gun knocking Nelson out the handle of it. Ben runs over dropping to his knees next to me. His hand shakily move my hair out of my face. 

"Keep your eyes on Ben" Deb says to me. "and Stay awake." 

"Deb she's pregnant we gotta get her help" Matt says. 

"Take her. I'll deal with Nelson" Deb says moving so Matt and take her place. 

"Woods get the car and bring it closer." Matt says tossing him the keys.

"Ben..." I say softly.

"Shh..." Ben says pulling me closer. "Save your strength love." 

I lay my head against his chest gently as Ben moves to pick me up. Matt helps carry me out to the car. Sam climbs in the Passenger seat as Matt helps Ben and I get into the back. I whimper out in pain slightly. I was starting to feel drowsy. 

"Stay awake Y/N" Matt says noticing my eyes starting to close. "Focus on me." 

I try to focus on Matt as Ben moves me slightly in his arms so he can kiss my head gently. His cheeks were wet from crying. I looked up at Ben. He looks down at me and caresses my cheek gently. My eyes go in and out of focus even though I was trying so hard to stay awake.

"Stay awake Y/n. Please don't go to sleep." I hear Ben plead down to me. 

"Woods drive faster" I hear Matt yell just before I slip out of consousness
