One month later, within the depths of the forest...
I yawn, and stretch. I don't even attempt to fix my dark reddish-brown hair, because its an absolute mess from living in the woods. I'd need a new pair of clothes eventually too. Those are things I probably should have thought of when I left the city about a month ago. But hey, at least I was far away from those wretches. Plus it wasn't really so bad once I figured out that the titans were less active at night. So, I just started my supply runs at night and slept when I actually got done.
I walk out of my small fort I had made high up in a tree. I had seen the small base the scouting regiment had made a few hundred meters away, so,I think I'll snag some supplies from them. I start to get into my 3D maneuvering gear, so that I'd be able to get back up my tree, and I toss on my Garrison cloak that I'd at tempted to disguise as a Scouting Regiment cloak to blend in if I needed to. It was okay, but it wouldn't pass under close inspection.
Once I was finally ready, I grapple across some trees and perch on a branch high above the camp. A few soldiers were moving, but not many. I spot a small building with smoke coming up. That was probably the kitchen. Why cook, when I could just steal some?
Once I was sure nobody was coming my way, I grapple down the tree and pull up the hood on my cloak. The kitchen isn't far, so I begin my walk, keeping my head down.
I plan to just walk in and grab some food, if they ask me any questions I'll just say that I missed breakfast.
I creak the door open (dammit) and enter the ramshackle kitchen. The Scouts had really settled in here, so a real wood stove had been built and everything. Then I notice a man, obviously a soldier, but with a cloth tied around his face to cover his mouth and his head as well, scrubbing madly at a stove.
"What do you need?" the man asked, with a surprisingly deep voice, but not looking at me while he focused on the stove.
"I,uh, missed breakfast,"I answer, not looking at him as I move toward the bread container on the table.
"Yeah right, Sasha," he retorts, finally turning around to look at me. "Well then. I don't think I've seen your face,"he says, walking over to me, scowling at me through his black bangs. I realize now just how short he was.
"What? I've been here the whole time," I answer firmly.
"Then why are you hiding your face with your hood?!" he answers, reaching up and pulling my hood down away from my face. "You're not even a part of the Scouts, are you?"
I sigh. This man seemed very familiar to someone I had heard of in the Scouts. Short, scowls and loves cleaning. "I'm sorry, Commander Levi," I say finally.
"Well then. You're not a Scout, but you are obviously a soldier," he nods slowly, and goes back to cleaning. "What group are you part of?" Levi adds, sounding just a bit menacing.
"The Garrison," I answer truthfully.
"And what would a member of the Garrison be doing in the forest?"he asks, handing me a cloth. He obviously wanted me to clean if I was going to stay here.
"I, uh...well," I started. What I had done was treason...but they weren't going to do anything about it, and I didn't want to join he Scouts, and do all the saving humanity crap. "I ran away when the Colossal Titan attacked the wall," I sat simply, and begrudgingly scrub at the table a little to make him happy.
"That's treason," he says. "If you wanted to go outside the walls you should have joined the Scouts," he says, turning around to face me.
"I kind of did," I chuckle, showing him my makeshift Scout logo on the back.
Levi suddenly looks at me, seeming extremely pissed. "You aren't even a member of the military, and you dare to bear the Wings of Freedom on your back?!" he questions, walking toward me slowly, and pulling away his cloth.
"To survive, yes," I answer, not quite as confident as usual. Something about this midget was so damn intimidating.
A sharp pain shoots through my knee and I drop to the floor. The midget kicked me! I go to get up, but he simply grabs a fork out of the sink and aims it at my head. "Don't think that I can't kill you with this," he threatens. "You're going to stay with us for now until we decide what to do with you," Levi glares, looking down at me.
