kazunari and i smiled for the camera, the two of us in our middle school uniforms. he held a vibrant orange sweatshirt in his hands, a logo on the heart of the shirt. across the back of the sweatshirt read "shutoku." i clung to a similar sweatshirt, colored white with red and black outlines. the name "seirin" was bordered in black and filled with red. once the flash went off and the camera was set down, the two of us sighed, folding up our sweatshirts and placing them on a near table.
"you both look great," my mom cooed, ruffling kazu's hair playfully. he gasped, smacking her hand away and muttering something about how she was going to ruin his hair for graduation and that he wouldn't find last minute love with it messed up.
dad stayed back, his arms crossed as he sighed. "how many more years are you two gonna go to different schools, huh?"
kazunari shrugged. "it was y/n's choice, anyway." he stepped up to a mirror in our family room, making adjustments to his hair.
"it's not my fault i was drawn to the school," i scoffed, adjusting the tie on my uniform.
"just study hard. that's all we ask." mom smiled, patting my head and smoothing my hair, glancing between the two of us. "you've already made us proud as it is."
kazu rolled his eyes, crossing his arms firmly across his chest. "so she gets her hair smoothed out and i get mine ruined?" i laughed a bit, he had a strikingly similar look to our dad when he had his arms crossed like that. "favoritism," he muttered, coming up behind me to gently nudge me towards the door. "can we go and graduate now? man, i'm sick of being a third year in middle school."
before being forced out of the house, i waved to my parents. "see you guys during graduation!" i shouted through the doorway before kazu hurriedly closed the door.
"can't believe we're going into high school," my brother sighed, throwing an arm across my shoulders and bringing me closer to him. "i'm stuck with a similar uniform for the next three years."
"i'm actually gonna miss my uniform." i replied, shoving my hands in my pockets. "i like the blue."
the two of us walked a few blocks, chatting about graduation and the fact that we were going into high school.
"y'know, if i'd have known my middle school basketball team was gonna get crushed by teiko, i'd probably have gone to school with you."
i sighed, peeling his arm off my shoulder. "if you had the chance, you'd lose all over again and i know it."
my brother, takao kazunari, wasn't the type to back down from a challenge. we were raised to accept things as they were and finish what we had started effectively. it wasn't about winning or losing with us, kazunari and i did it because we had passion. when he lost to my middle school's basketball team, he told me that he'd defeat my classmates the next time they crossed paths. i looked up to my brother; even though we were in the same grade, there was so much i could learn from him.
"damn right," he chuckled, giving me a side hug. "i can't wait to play them this year." there was an intense sparkle in his steel blue eyes as he waved me goodbye.
"good luck at graduation!" i said, his only response was a peace sign as he walked away.

"takao, can you believe we've graduated?" momoi laughed, waving her certificate in my face before giving me a tight hug.
i hugged her back, smiling. "it hasn't fully hit me yet, honestly. i can't believe we're all going into high school."
"we should celebrate! let's hang out today. we can have daiki and the rest of them with us as well!" she suggested, twirling her light pink hair and grinning at me.
