BACKSTORY: Fitz was gone and it was down to Mack to break the news to Jemma.

Two hours after Fitz died, Mack was still in shock. His best friend had died right in front of him and he hadn't been able to save him. He was currently sat beside the stretcher he and May had carefully placed him on, staring tearfully at him.

"Mack" May said softly "We're here. Daisy's waiting just outside."

Mack nodded slightly before standing up and getting behind the stretcher. May grabbed the front of the stretcher and the two started to manoeuvre their way off the plane.

"May?" Daisy asked, surprise evident on her face as she saw her mentor coming into sight with a somber look on her face. Then she saw Mack. And then...she saw Fitz.

"FITZ" She screamed, running over to her friend and desperately searching for his pulse "No, no, no, no"

"Daisy" Mack said gently as the woman frantically tried to wake Fitz up "Tremors, he's gone"

Daisy started openly sobbing at that as May wrapped her up in a warm hug. Moments later, they heard footsteps approaching and then a soft gasp.

"Bobo" Deke muttered from where he and Yo-Yo stood by the door.

Yo-Yo quickly brushed away her own tears before taking Deke by the hand and guiding him over to the others.

"I'm so sorry Deke. I couldn't save him" Mack said quietly as Yo-Yo walked over and wrapped her arms around him.

"You did the best you could" Deke mumbled as he stared down at Fitz' body.

"Someone needs to tell Jemma" Daisy muttered.

"I'll go" Mack volunteered immediately "Where is she?"

"With Coulson in the Medbay" Yo-Yo told him, gently kissing his cheek before moving to comfort Deke.

"Someone call Hunter and Bobbi. Tell them what happened and give them the co-ordinates to get here." Mack instructed before turning to leave.

"They were disavowed. They can't-"

"I don't care" Mack interrupted May "They were Fitz' friends. They deserve to know what happened and be given the chance to say goodbye. Not to mention, Simmons will need all the support she can get"

With that, Mack moved quickly down the corridor towards where Coulson and Simmons were. He soon reached the door and paused outside. He took a deep breath before pushing the door open.

Jemma was stood at Coulson's side smiling at him.

"You'll be right as rain in no time sir. Although it was quite the close call" Jemma admonished fondly.

When he entered, she looked up and smiled at him too and Mack froze again. He had no idea what to say to her. He could tell his face said it all as he saw Coulson's face fall before Jemma's gradually fell too. Worry and fear etched on her face.

"Where's Fitz? Is he alright?" Jemma said, moving towards the end of Coulson's bed.

"Simmons" Mack said, voice breaking off at the end.

"Where is he Mack? I need to see him" Jemma demanded, voice bordering on hysterical.

"Jemma, maybe you should sit down" Coulson said, carefully swinging his legs over the side of the bed as he noticed Simmons starting to sway slightly.

"No. Where. Is. Fitz?" Jemma yelled.

"I'm sorry Jemma. So sorry. He's gone" Mack said softly as he walked further into the room as Jemma started shaking her head profusely as she mumbled incoherently.

"NO. LEO'S NOT GONE. HE CAN'T BE GONE" She screamed before her legs gave way and she crumbled to the ground, sobs racking her body.

Mack felt his heart break yet again as he knelt on the ground and pulled the distraught girl into his arms. Moments later, Jemma began to hyperventilate and shake.

"Jemma? Come on, breathe. Everything will be alright. You'll be okay" Mack soothed, looking desperately at Coulson for help.

Coulson stood from the bed and discreetly reached into one of Jemma's many drawers where he found a familiar syringe. He then made his way over to the other two and knelt at their side. Coulson gently shifted the girl's hair and slid the needle into her neck. Within a minute, the sedative did it's job and Jemma's eyes closed as she went limp.

The sight of the rise and fall of Jemma's chest and the tears still streaming down her face comforted Mack as he thought back to the moment, merely hours ago, when he held Fitz' still body in the same way he was currently holding Jemma.

Coulson leaned over Jemma and gently wiped the tears off her face. The marks he cleared were replaced by the tears falling from his own eyes onto her face. Mack glanced up and Coulson and took in the sheer pain filling his eyes as he gazed down at one of his pseudo daughters.

It was no secret that Coulson had practically adopted Jemma, Fitz and Daisy the moment he met the three of them on the BUS all those years ago. Mack couldn't even begin to imagine how he was feeling. His kind of son was dead, one of his kind of daughters was completely inconsolable and he didn't even know what was happening with his other.

"We should go join the others. They must be worried about her" Coulson said softly, as the two men stood up, Mack gently gathering the young woman into his arms.

The two men exited the room and made their way towards the communal area. As they entered, they found everyone else sat waiting for them.

"Oh god" Daisy said, tears dripping off her face as she saw Jemma "Jem. Is she okay?"

"She will be" Mack said softly as he placed the unconscious girl on the sofa between Daisy and Deke. Both of whom wrapped their arms around her to offer some semblance of comfort for when she woke up "We just had to sedate her to calm her down"

The agents settled around the room in a tense silence. All thinking about the only one not there.

"Leo...I love you...come...back" Jemma mumbled in her sleep "don't...leave...me"

For the first time, Fitz did leave her. And he wasn't coming back.
