Everyone knew something bad was coming, but they didn't know how to stop it. They all just knew how to fight it. They knew that they had to stay together, that they needed to be one to defeat Voldemort.
Although it pained Rylie to know, she knew that Snape was part of Voldemort's plans and that he was a death eater. She would often catch herself watching him, most of the time out of worry. To her, Snape was vulnerable, and her first love.
No matter what she does she can never keep her mind off of him, even when it hurts each time. She could never forget their 8 years of childhood love. She could never forget the pain that he put her through. Unknown to her, this was only the beginning of the endless pain.
Rylie sat in the library doing some 'last-minute studying' when in reality she was actually glancing at Snape, who sat on the other side of the library. She watched the way he wrote and the emotionless face that he always held. However, Snape looked exhausted. Bags hid under his eyes and his back slouched with stress.
Sighing Rylie took in the past 17 years of her life. She and her friends grew a lot from the past 7 years. James changed from an immature boy to a man who knows when a joke is not the answer to anything. He learned how to truly value the girl he was in love with and won her heart in return.
Peter didn't change as much as James. He was still a follower, blind to his own opinions and beliefs. He was still quiet and rarely joined conversations unless it was to agree on something the group was saying. However, for the past couple of weeks, Rylie and the rest of the group noticed him acting odd or weird.
Remus was brilliant. He was the Gryffindor Perfect and the smartest in the house other than Lily. He grew not only to be kind, but wise. Although he still had issues with his lycanthropy, he was slowly realizing how loved he was and that it didn't matter in the end because he was Remus Lupin not a monster, but the kindest person that you could ever meet.
Sirius is one of the best older brothers that Rylie could ever ask for. He was just like James when they were younger, impulsive, and careless. However, he grew up into a man. Someone who many could depend on, although, he did have his mischievous side sometimes. Rylie and he were quite close, both sharing an abusive background.
Then, she started to remember the first 8 years of her life, when Snape was not a stranger, but her best friend.
The day they first became close was the best day of Rylie's life.
5-year-old Rylie was playing in the flower field, trying to get away from the screams and shouts in her home. She sat in the field of flowers, enjoying the peacefulness around her. She started to sing quietly to herself as she entangled the flowers in her hands, creating a flower crown.
"Hold me close and hold me fast
The magic spell you cast
This is la vie en rose"
"You have a pretty voice Rylie," A familiar voice said. Rylie shifted her gaze onto the boy who captured her heart from first sight.
"Thank you, Severus," She said sweetly.
The day they made their first promise.
The two 7-year-olds laid in their special place, the very place where they first became friends. The flowers around them were swaying happily as they listened to the young girl sing. Young Snape smiled softly at his best friend's sweet actions. Back then, they were close, some would think they were in love.
"When you kiss me heaven sighs
And though I close my eyes
I see la vie en rose"
"Hey, Ry?" Severus said, gently cutting off her singing.
"Yes, Sev?" She asked lovingly.
"You promise not to forget me right?" He asked timidly.
"Only if you promise not to forget me" She responded reassuringly.
"I promise"
The day she started to lose him.
Again the two children were playing with one another, giggling and smiling softly to one another. The two were playing hide and seek, young Snape as the seeker and young Rylie as the hidden. Rylie was again singing softly to herself as she waited for Snape which seemed to last forever.
"When you press me to your heart
I'm in a world apart
A world where roses bloom
And when you speak"
"Sev?" She asked, getting out from her hiding spot, only to find her best friend gazing at a red-headed girl who was walking alongside their field.
"Sev?" She asked, approaching the love-struck boy as he continued to gaze at the stranger, not hearing young Rylie's attempts to get his attention.
From that moment Rylie knew they wouldn't be the same.
The day she had to let go.
8 almost 9 years old Rylie left her house limping painfully on one leg, the other bruised from the hits she was getting at home. She made her way toward her and young Snape's field, waiting patiently for him to come as he always did for the past 8 years. As she waited she sang once again, only to have him show up at the end.
"Angels sing from above
Everyday words seems
To turn into love song
Give your heart and soul to me
And life will always be la vie en rose"
It was hours later that he came, not even looking a bit guilty for being late.
"Where were you Sev?" Young Rylie asked him.
"I was with Lils, Rylie" Young Snape said excitedly, oblivious to the hurt expression that was on young Rylie's face when he called her by her full name and not her nickname.
"She's amazing Rylie. She's smart and beautiful and I think I'm in love." He gushed with a dreamy expression.
Rylie's heart broke at his words. She wanted to hate the girl for beating her from earning Snape's affections, but she knew she couldn't.
"Is it okay if I hang out with her for the rest of the week Rylie? You're okay with it, aren't you?" He urged, even though he was going to hang out with young Lily in the end regardless of his best friend's response.
"Of course Severus," Young Rylie said with a forced smile.
"Great! I promise I'll hang out with you next time!"
Rylie watched her first love walk away from her with another girl on his mind, silently hoping that she wouldn't lose him to her. However, he never kept his promise, along with other promises that he made years before. After this moment she was forgotten all because she didn't want him to get hurt. So, she let go.
"Staring at him again huh?" A familiar voice said, snapping Rylie out of her daze.
"You must really love him Onyx." The voice said softly, sitting next to the blond-haired girl.
"Yeah, I am," Rylie said softly with a sad smile on her face. Remus gave her a sympathetic smile. He knew from the first moment he saw her gazing at the Slytherin boy that she had feelings for him, however, he also knew that the certain Slytherin boy was in love with someone else.
"Lily was asking for you, and wanted you to help her get dressed for the graduation ceremony," Remus said trying to take her mind off the Slytherin across from them. She only responded with a soft 'oh' causing the werewolf to sigh sadly.
"Cheer up Onyx, you never know maybe he'll change and come to his senses." He said reassuringly.
"Maybe," Rylie said hopefully.
