5 years prior

Lucky walked causally to his car as he observed his reflection in the window as he passed it smiling.

He felt good. He had closed another deal and life couldn't be better. It was good... a little too good. Despite his nickname being Lucky, Saadiq was anything but that.

A master at illegal and legal operations but had a terrible string of romantic partnerships that ALWAYS turned toxic.

He was over love and over the hum drum that came with sleeping around as well.

"Mr. Griffin."

Lucky turned his head and stared at the icy blonde white woman who gave him a tight lip smile.

"And you are?" He replied in a gruff tone since he was on a tight schedule and hadn't yet determined whether or not he should indulge.

"Teresa Truscott." she reached out her hand quickly. "I'm a friend of Royal's"

She smiled knowing that would make him perk his ears up.

Lucky was a lot of things, but business was always a main concern for him. As long as money flowed he was interested.

He had heard about Royal from an old crooney of his at a local barbershop. Royal was the man on his side of town. He moved weight with some bloods through his trucking company and also had major ties to the adult exchange market which just so happened to be Lucky's field of expertise.

He quickly gave Teresa his card and slid into his sleek black Mercedes C Class allowing his body to melt into the interior.

Starting up the vehicle he swiftly pulled off allowing 50 cent to melodically distract him from his constant thoughts.

"Emerald." He mumbled as he looked out the window seeing a woman with fire engine red 30 inch hair, long red nails, and a black sundress walking across the street with her 4 year old.

Emerald was an on and off love interest of his that he had recently cut things off with again. Lucky didn't understand her. She was cold, distant, and weird, that is until she wanted something. The constant bickering and nonsense that ruled the sheer simplicity that was them as a couple was enough for Lucky to walk away. In his mind he had already wasted enough time, energy, and resources.

He beeped the horn to rush what he thought was Emerald and her daughter only for the person to stop mid walk across the street and come up to his car window.

She knocked on the window politely still holding her daughter's hand who was standing shyly behind her mother.

He rolled down the window confused and was cut off before he could speak.

"Sir if you could kindly not beep the next time you're at a red light and pedestrians are walking across the street. It's a little rude and a bit narcissistic in my opinion." She sweetly quipped as she walked away not wanting to further the conversation.

The energy lifted him. He smiled as he noticed the logo on her book bag while her silhouette was quickly retreating . He couldn't quite figure it out, but it was refreshing to have a woman be so soft spoken yet mildly aggressive. It turned him on when women conducted themselves as women and not like they were niggas on the streets. He continued his drive getting to his place of business in a timely fashion as he called his sister Kandi.

Kandi was the girl everybody wanted to be like. She was naturally fly and attracted men with money on a regular basis. She made it her business to be surrounded by the flyest chicks and never failed to mention that to her brother.

His sister answered the phone in a very gruff voice signifying that she had indeed been sleep.

"Hello?"

"Aye Kandi who's that chick that be doing your hair."

"Ummmm it's this girl named Mercy, she works at Petunia's why?"

"I think I just met her."

"No you didn't what she look like?"

"She's thick, lightskin, fat ass face, with some red hair. She got a kid that look like her too and-"

"I'm just gonna cut you off that is not Mercy. That's her best friend Apple."

He silently thought about it and for some reason in normal Lucky fashion he said the first thing that was on his mind.

"What the fuck kinda name is Apple."

Kandi groaned in no mood for her brother's usual antics.

"That's not her full name Luck it's a nickname her real name is Aphrodite."

"And what the fuck kinda name is that? How you make an Apple out of Apodihees"

"APHRODITE Luck!"

"You know what I meant."

He chuckled causing his sister to join in despite her being so tired because in her eyes Lucky was a comedian. His goofy and charming demeanor is what had prevented many of the fight that could have potentially ensued between them on various occasions.

Lucky didn't earn his nickname from his successes because he just recently started having those. The name Lucky came from an OG who saw how smooth he was at convincing people to do things. It was part of the reason Lucky was so good at his profession.

His motto was that all people want to appease people it just takes the certain type of push. He believed he had that push and that edge.

"Hey... can you do me a favor sis."

"What Lucky?"

"Find out everything about that Apple chick."

He hung up not in the mood to deal with the questions and 3rd degree that came from asking Kandi to do things.

He loved Kandi but Kandi was a liability to the brand that he and Beans built together. She talked too much and reacted way too quickly. That was his sister though and he'd always be there for her.

Getting out of the car Lucky double checked his suit. Selling insurance was a great cover up to prostitution and drugs. It wasn't too bad that he always looked fly either in his upscale suits.

Beans watched as Lucky entered the warehouse through the cameras shaking his head.

"Lucky is not gonna like this." He mumbled under his breath.

He sat contemplating the ways in his head. How do you tell your best friend that things aren't going according to plan.
