Once upon a time, in a far away kingdom of Goryeo, there was a wise and loving king who ruled the northern part of the nation. He married passed his prime age but despite the negative and opposing words from his royal subjects, his loving wife and him managed to give birth to nine beautiful baby girls. But in exchange to such gift, his wife passed away from birth complications months after the youngest princess was born.
The king fell into deep despair and grief from his wife's death, not knowing that the eastern kingdom, full of ruthless warriors and leaders, was plotting to take over their kingdom while it's on its weakened state. It is expected to be a brutal battle, so he sent his nine daughters far away from the kingdom for safety. After days of waiting, the nine princesses discovered the terrible news of their father's death yet they honored his sacrifices who fought 'til the end for the sake of their kingdom.
The northern kingdom remained under regency order until the eldest princess can lead her people. Yet, when the the eldest princess came to age, she fell in love with a commoner that automatically stripped away her royal title and privilege. The eldest didn't care much about it as she did it for love, which led to giving the responsibility to the second eldest princess as Queen of the Northern Kingdom—
"Jeongyeon."
A pair of hands suddenly shook the maiden from her slumber, her eyes fluttering open softly. She slowly sat straight from her wooden table full of papers, and stamps. It was around early noon when she fell asleep by her desk. She was inside their library overlooking the frozen pond and the softly fallen snow, laying on the branches like pillows and marshmallows. It is a typical day in the northern kingdom as it snows ten months in a year.
"You should be sleeping on your bed, not here. You're gonna give yourself some terrible stiff neck." The fifth princess named Jihyo frowned upon her tired-looking sister. "Your royal subjects won't be happy if they see you having those terrible bags underneath your eyes."
"Who cares about them? Do they think handling this shit is easy?" Jeongyeon said with exhaustion.
"You're a queen, please watch your language too." Jihyo crossed her arms.
"Okay, mom." Jeongyeon mocked her jokingly making Jihyo chuckle at her sister's exasperation. "I sometimes feel like you're more older than me."
"I feel like babysitting a couple of toddlers when I'm with the others. Had to scold them every now and then." Jihyo chuckled along.
Their conversation were cut short when one of the kingdom noblemen knocked on the door, "Your Majesties, the royal advisors are waiting by the main hall."
Both of them went out of the library where the other maids, accompanied them to the main hall. White walls, silver and blue crests, and high ceilings welcomed them when they entered and all of their middle aged royal subjects and advisors were there, appointed by their late father. The previous regency rule didn't want the princesses to change any rules even though Jeongyeon had the power to do so.
