Ashton - Smile

“Ashton? Could you drive my last patient home? She doesn’t have a ride.” Ashton’s boss asks from the doorway of her office. Ashton nods his head and continues to pack his things.

“He said yes.” He hears his boss says to someone in her office. Then out walks a girl that looks about Ashton’s age. She has light auburn hair and dark brown eyes. Her eyes land on Ashton and she stops walking to stand in front of his desk.

Ashton sligs his bag over his shoulder and looks back up at her. He smiles and she smiles back. You can tell it’s forced, she has a sadness lingering in her eyes.

“Ready to go?” Ashtons asks and she nods her head, then silently follows him out the door.

Their approach Ashton’s car and he watches her soundlessly slip into the passage seat. Ashton throws his bag in the back and jumps into the driver’s seat. He glances at her and then puts the car in drive.

After a couples minutes of silence Ashton realizes he doesn’t know where the hell he’s going.

“Um, where to you live?” He asks, she glances at him and mumbles an address under her breathe. She lives quite a ways away from his work. This is going to be a long drive.

Being tired of the deafening silence that has fallen over them, Ashton decides to break the ice.

“So, what’s your name?” He asks.

“Amber.” She says continuing to stare out the window.

“Pretty name.” Ashton says and that gets her attention. She spins around in her seat and glares at him. He just flashes a smile.

“What’s your name?” She asks coldly, crossing her arms.

“Ashton.” He replies and she raises an eyebrow.

Ashton pulls into the parking lot of a convenience store and puts the car in park.

“Amber, I have decided you are a deeply sad person and I intend to make you happier. What’s your favorite candy?” Ashton asks. She let’s out a bitter laugh.

“That’s your way of making me happy? Candy?” She spits.

“My goal is to make you smile before I drop you off at her house. Candy is just the first step in my plan.”

“Starbursts. I like starbursts.” Amber says and Ashton smiles. He then hops out of the car and head into the store.

He comes back a few minutes later with Amber’s starbursts and a bag of skittles for him. He climbs in the car and hands the starbursts to Amber. She takes them and then Ashton starts the car and head out to his next location in his plan.

After a few minutes past Ashton parks next to a park and jumps out of the driver’s seat.

Amber stare at the park and takes in her surroundings having yet to get out of the car. She looks at the sun faded slide, the monkey bars, and the swings moving slightly in the wind.

Amber can’t remember the last time she went to the park. Sometimes she can't remember the last time she smiled. She slowly open the car door and slides out of the seat. Her converse clad foot sinks into the ground a little.

Ashton is already making his way to the swings. He glances over his shoulder when he hear the car door shut. Amber is slowly walking towards him with her arms wrapped around herself. The wind blows her wavy amber hair over her shoulder showing more of her face.

She stops walking when she a good three feet away from Ashton. “What are we doing here?” She asks her voice being carried away in the wind. Ashton smiles.

“Having fun.” He says then motions for her to sit on one of the swings. “I’ll push you.” He says as she slowly sits down. She feels his hand on the small of her back and then he lightly pushes her.

He continues to push her until she’s going as high as she can go.

Amber laughs then her eyes go wide. She hasn’t heard herself laugh in years.

Suddenly Ashton is in front of her grabbing the chains of the swing to stop her.

“Did you just laugh?” Ashton asks his hazel eyes wide. She nods. Ashton smiles and throws his hands into the air. He start making wooping sounds and runs in circles around the park. This just causes Amber to laugh harder.

Ashton runs back over to her and she smiles.

“It feels good to smile.” Amber says.

“I bet.” Ashton replies. “Okay, let’s get you home.” He says walking to his car.

“Wait!” Amber calls and Ashton turn on his heel. “Could we get something to eat first?”

Ashton smiles.
