To set the scene: 4 college age girls, living in an on campus apartment. Two of the four were safety majors, one an education major, and the other a hospitality management major. Their lives were set. They were meant to gain the college experience then set out for the real world after four long grueling years of education. The apartment was filled with laughter, joy, and merriment. That was until the incident.
On September 23, 2021 one of the girls noticed the prominent smell of natural gas leaking steadily into their apartment. Scared, they contacted their RA. Unbeknownst to them, their RA had better things to do than be concerned for a group of wild 20 year olds. They resorted to calling the cops. The cops refused to believe them and gave some half-ass excuses.
"It's just your furnace kicking on for the first time in months," he said. "You guys will be fine," he assured them.
Unfortunately, they were not fine.
Nervous, they decided they were just being paranoid and thought that the scent might just have been from an old filter in the furnace. They would sleep that night and tackle the problem in the morning.
They didn't make it to morning. Each of them passed in their sleep as the natural gas flooded their lungs and slowly suffocated them. After days of not showing up to class, and them not answering their parents phone calls, they were finally found. Each of them curled up in bed, having slipped away to paradise. The funerals were morbid and depressing, friends and family cried for the loss of the girls. Benches were placed respectively with the names of the girls prominently displayed on the seat of the bench in gold plating.
"They're in a better place now," folks assured their parents. But alas, they were in no better place than they were before.
