"Mate."

I gasp audibly and feel my heart stop for a second. Was that..

"Val, you okay?" I hear Mom say, though it sounds like background noise. I jump up and run to my room needing privacy. 'Later' I link her.

My stomach fills with butterflies. I was sure I heard him speak. It was like someone mind linking me only in a whisper. And it sent tingles down my spine. I open the door to my balcony and sit on the porch swing contained there. Desperately trying to hear him again I open my mind and take a few deep breathes.

There. I feel him. He is worried. The butterflies in my stomach won't settle down and I am sure he can feel my nervous confusion. There's that nagging push again. I hesistate momentarily before opening up more.

"Mate." I hear in my mind once again.

"Yes." I say both mentally and out loud.

No response was heard. Maybe I didn't get through to him I think. I try again. "It's you."

"It's me." his voice makes my insides melt and I'm too stunned to respond. "Are you there?"

"Yes" I breathed out with a feeling of joy.

"Mate. You are mine." I shiver in delight at his words.

"And you are mine."

"Are you okay? What happend?" his voice is filled with worry.

"I'm fine." Why wouldn't I be?

"I felt your pain earlier. Then just now I could feel you were sad." he sounded hurt as though he thought I wouldn't tell him.

"Oh. A little boy ran into me on his bike. I cut my shoulder on a rock. It was an accident. I'm fine..... I'm sorry aren't you as confused and freaked out as I am that this is happening? Our connection I mean" he seemed so calm about our unusual connection.

"Oh I'm relieved you are okay. I was surprised at first but I spoke to my father and he told me of some writings that spoke of a rare connection happening. He said if our wolves are really strong it can happen. Its kind of amazing that its not Just a legend."

"Yes. My pack doctor told me the same thing. I'm still surprised we are even talking." I plucked a leaf from the tree next to the balcony.

"What pack are you from?"

"Alpha Benjamin Warren's pack. Red Dawn." I respond twirling the leaf.

"Oh wow. Southern California. You are so far away from where I'm at."

"You know of it? Where are you at?" Just how far was my mate?

"Right now I'm in Spain."

I gasped in shock dropping the leaf. Spain. How is this possible? "That's...so far..." how can I meet my mate if he is halfway across the world? I feel myself becoming discouraged. Who knows how long it'll take to see each other. He has his life there and I have mine here.

"Hey. Don't feel so sad. I'm only here for a while. I'm headed to the states soon. I'm only here for pack business." his words confuse me.

"You don't live there?"

"No. I'm just visiting on business with a few other guys from my pack. I planned on heading back a week ago but then...." he broke off.

"Then...?" What? What happened to make him stay? Wait....a week ago was when I first felt him. He was sad. "Did something happen? Is that why I felt your sadness and anger?"

"You felt that?" I can hear the helplessness in his voice. "A pack member was killed. He was...." his voice catches slightly "...he was a close friend."
