Chapter Five
We were sitting in his room listening to Papa Roach. They are his favorite band. He sang along to Hollywood Whore, his favorite song. I watched him sing and thought about how beautiful his voice sounded.
“Wake up, V.” I was shaken awake and opened my eyes to glare at whoever it was.
“What?” I groaned, still glaring at Cassie.
“We are going shopping. So get up!”
“We?” I asked unenthusiastically.
“Yes. We. Now get your lazy butt up. It’s already noon and we have to buy Halloween costumes.”
“Halloween? Aren’t we still in September?” I asked.
“Actually, V, Halloween is two days away.” She looked at me worriedly. That makes it a little over a month since I met Jason.
“I thought we were going to go watch Silent Hill?”
“That wouldn’t last as long,” she pouted.
“Well, can’t we just buy a bunch of candy and rent a ton of movies like we do every year? I really don’t feel like going trick or treating.”
“Oh come on, who doesn’t love free candy?”
“Chris? You’re here too?”
“Yep. Come on, we have costumes to buy.” He grabbed my hand and pulled me out of bed.

Thanks to my best friends, I am now up and dressed and sitting in Chris’s car as he drives us to the mall. Halloween is my favorite holiday, might as well make the most of it, right?
We just arrived at the little costume shop by the mall and are currently searching through countless costumes, trying to find some that don’t suck.
“I think I might just be a banana this year,” I sighed.
“Yeah, and I’ll be Justin Bieber,” Chris said sarcastically.
“Ha-ha. Very funny,” I said.
“Why don’t you be a devil and I’ll be an angel,” Cassie said as she held up one costume in each hand as she gestured toward the changing rooms.
I sighed and took the devil costume from her as we went into the changing rooms. I was standing in the changing room looking at myself in the mirror. The costume consisted of black short shorts with a tail attached to them, a red tank top that was sparkly from the front, and red horns. I stepped out of the changing room to see Cassie admiring herself in the mirror. Her costume is a strapless white dress that stops just above her knees, white boots, big white angel wings, and a tacky halo.
“Hey, sexy,” she said once she realized I was standing behind her.
“Why do I get the shorter costume?” I asked.
“Because you look better in it. Now come one, let’s go show Chris our costumes.” She dragged me out of the girls’ changing rooms and back out into the store. “Isn’t she gorgeous!” It was more of a statement than a question.
“Uh, don’t you think it’s showing a little too much?” Chris asked.
“That’s what I said,” I muttered under my breath.
“I’m sorry, what was that?” Cassie pretended not to hear me.
“Nothing,” I sighed.
“That cute guy over there is already checking you out,” she whispered to me and nodded in his direction.
I turned around to see that the ‘cute guy’ Cassie was referring to was Jason. I turned bright red, turned back around, and started to walk back to the changing rooms. They knew nothing about my being friends with Jason. I never mentioned him to them.
“Hey, Rainbow Bright!” he called after me. I was hoping he would let me get away… I slowly turned and walked over to him.
“Jason. I, uh, didn’t see you there.” That was an obvious lie.
“Sure,” he said obviously not buying it.
“Well, I got to go…” I said awkwardly. “Bye.”
“Bye. I’ll see you at school.”
-
“Who was that?” Cassie asked as we walked to Chris’s car with our newly bought Halloween attire.
“Just some guy I met a month ago,” I said casually as if it wasn’t a big deal, but according to Chris and Cassie it was.
“And you didn’t think you should have told us about him?” Chris asked.
“Well, I didn’t know I was obliged to tell you of everyone I’ve ever met.”
“Well, if it’s a guy like that you kind of do,” Cassie replied.
“A guy like what?” I asked.
“Cute and completely your type,” she said.
“I didn’t know I had a ‘type’.” I rolled my eyes.
“All I’m saying is you should give the guy a chance. He seemed really into you.” Oh no. Here it comes. Cassie the match maker.
“Cass, what did I tell you about playing match maker?” Chris warned.
“But I’m just trying to help,” she pouted.
“No,” he said sternly.
“But-“ He cut her off.
“Even if Victoria liked this guy, I don’t think she’d be too happy about you trying to play match maker. You have a very different way of getting people together than she can handle.”
“Fine.”
All I could think was thank you, Chris. Now I remember why I didn’t tell her about Jason. It was because I knew she would react this way.
