Lyla's POV
"Ly, come on! Tryouts are in 15 minutes, you're going to be late!" My mom calls out. She wants me to be early to everything I do. Today I have varsity softball tryouts. I'm a sophomore and my high school doesn't usually let sophomores play varsity but I wanted to tryout anyways. Afterwards I get to hang out with my best friend, Marrisa.
"I'm coming Mom!" I run across my room, grab my duffle bag and sprint down the stairs. I turn towards the garage, grab my bat bag and jog out to the car. I throw my bags in the trunk and hop in. My mom puts the car in reverse and backs out of the drive way. "Remember, after tryouts I'm spending the night at Marissa's. So just drop me off and you can come home!"
"I want to watch you Ly. I want to be there when you make the team!" I pull my phone out of my pocket.
"I'll video chat you as soon as they announce the roster! Okay?" She smiles, nods her head, and slowly applies the brakes as we pull into the parking lot of the school. I jump out, grab my bags and walk towards the front doors. I tie the laces of my cleats and start jogging down to the field. The baseball team is having tryouts today too. As I jog I look over to their field and watch all the guys warm up. One of them stands out. He catches every ball thrown to him and makes a perfect throw every time. I see Marissa and jog a little bit faster. When I get to the field, I set my stuff down and start stretching with the other girls. I look around, they all have ribbons and curls in their hair. Like cheerleaders on prom night! I always my hair in a pony tail. A sloppy, yet comfortable pony tail. When we're done we all go to the dugout and grab our gloves. I notice I'm the only one who runs to the dugout. Finally, tryouts begin.
Peter's POV
I just finished varsity baseball tryouts, I'm a sophomore so there's a low chance I'll make it. I walk over to the other side of the dugout. I look at the roster pinned to the bulletin board. I look at the names:
1. Joshua
2. Kaleb
3. Zach
4. Seth
5. Todd
6. Devin
7. Matt
8. Hunter
9. Corey
10. Peter
11. Aaron
12. Chris
13. Brandon
14. Stephen
15. Thomas
I made the team! I pack up my stuff and walk outside. I set everything down and sit on the bleachers. I start to smile. The softball girls aren't finished, so I walk over there. I lean against the fence, examining every player as they bat, pitch, catch, or run. I notice one girl in particular. She's catcher, she's fast, and is a great hitter. She doesn't walk around or daze off. She stays focused and runs. She has her hair in messy pony tail unlike all the others. They finish and all the girls huddle into the dugout. I see her walk out. I'm a little nervous to talk to her since I've never met her, but I go for it.
"Hey!" I call out to her, she looks over at me. "I uh, watched you out there. You're really good!" She smiles and I hesitate. "I'm Peter, Peter Musgraves."
"I'm Lyla, Lyla Croft. You can call me Ly though, everyone else does." She smiles.
"Did you make the team?" I look into her beautiful green eyes. Do I have a crush on her? I do, but I don't even know her! It doesn't matter though, love is love.
"Yeah. How about you? I saw you warming up, you're not bad yourself!" She punches me in the arm, like friends do. Are we friends now? I guess I'm not horrible at talking to girls!
"Uh yeah. I guess you're a junior then?"
"Sophomore. You?" My eyes widen.
"Me too! I've never seen you around school before?"
"I keep quiet." She winks at me.
"Hey um, would you like to catch a movie with me later?" I put my hands in my pockets and look at the sidewalk under our cleats.
"Hold on. Wait here, I just need to check something." She runs into the dugout, when she comes back a huge smile stretches across her face. "I would love to!" I start to smile too. "We can go right now if you want?" I nod. We walk up to the parking lot. I show her my truck, we throw our bags in the bed and hop in. I drive down to the movie theater. I get out, walk to the other side of the truck and open her door. "Thank you!" She smiles.
"So what movie should we see?"
"I was thinking... Batter Up And Bombs Away or Flight By Sea!"
"You're in to World War II movies?" She nods. "Me too! So how about Flight By Sea?"
"Works for me." We walk into the theater and sit down, the lights dim and I think to myself, I did good today.
