Steve Rogers x Reader
When it all started, it was perfect. Or, at least, my little version of it. When Steve barged into my room after a mission. I had a close call and by the time I got back to the compound, Tony had greatly exaggerated about how close to death I was. And everyone in the compound seemed to know the second we landed the quinjet. I made sure to be quick to my room, taking the route that I knew would make me least likely to run into anyone. And I was successful. Until I got into my room.
The door was mere centimeters away from shutting before it flew open again, slamming against the wall and making my heart jump in my chest. If the mission didn't stop my heart, this almost did. I whipped around in time to see Steve let out a sigh of relief. I went to question him as he came towards me, but his lips were on mine before I could make a sound. And why would I ever fight that? Especially since it's all I wanted since I met him.
All I fought to do was close the door behind us. That night he convinced me that it would probably be best not to tell the rest of the team. At least not at first. We wanted something to be just ours. Our special thing that no one and nothing else could touch or ruin. He had said he wanted to keep me for himself. At least for a little while. And so he did. And that's how it's been for the past year. We wait til everyone is asleep and he sneaks to my room or me to his.
We've stolen kisses and glances, whispered "I love you"'s and nicknames. All in the dark. Until he didn't. I've been so sure, convincing myself that something hasn't shifted between me and Steve the past couple months. I felt it the first night he didn't come home. His mission had finished and I watched as Bucky walked through the front door without him, claiming that Steve wanted some air and would be back later.
I had never waited so long. Everyone had long since gone upstairs and went to bed by the time that I fell asleep on the couch at 3 in the morning. Sam had been the one to wake me up the next morning on his way to his morning run, asking if I was okay. I played it off, telling him that I must've dozed off while watching TV. "Did Steve ever come back last night? I didn't hear him come in," I remember asking, masking my worry with curiosity.
He looked confused, but answered regardless, informing me that Steve had come back late last night, using the back entrance, and went straight to bed. My heart hurt a little at the new information, wondering if I had done something wrong. He seemed fine when I had last seen him a few days before his mission. He seemed more than fine as he kissed me deeply, whispering "my best girl," against my lips, before dragging himself out of my bed, getting dressed, and leaving my room, leaving me with an "I love you doll. See you soon."
It wasn't until noon that he left his room. I was met with a quick glance and a single word. "Hey." He didn't seem angry as he moved throughout the day, not paying me much attention. That's how he usually acted around me when others were around. But that day it felt oddly colder than usual. And I couldn't tell if he meant it to be, but in my head, it was. And it wasn't till 6pm that I was able to get him alone. Quickly, the panic that I thought was gone by now came back and was evident in my tone.
"Did I do something wrong?"
He looked confused. "No, why would you think that?"
He wasn't as comforting as he usually was. He would usually take my face into his hands or pull me into his arms. Instead, he crossed them, staring down at me.
