We all got into groups, to where we would be going. I was standing alone in the fifth. The rest were assigned to the fourth or third and a couple were in the first. They were the backup. I was the replacements. Fen's reg got called out and he walked over to me. He shook my hand.
"I had no idea. No wonder you were freaking out." He said as he stood next to me.
"Thanks."
"I've been training for this for years, but kid even I won't be able to pick you up if you fuck up."
"That's it! Go to your assigned vehicles!" Fen and I walked over to ours and got in. It was just a Austin Champ and was only for the four of us traveling. We got in the back with the two experienced Olients in the front.
The ride was long and cold. Despite the hot temperature I couldn't help but feel the wind slapping me in my face. It was cold and harsh, it seemed to tell me that my future would be just as bad. It was my wake up call. When the car stopped we got out.
"You two are on your own now." They saluted us and got back into the car.
"We are so dead."
"Shut up, Davis." Fen hit my arm.
"You two got here faster then we thought." A woman stood in front of us.
"Come with me. Olient Fen and Davis." She lead us into the main building.
"Sir, this is Olient Fen and Davis. They just arrived." She handed a file over to him.
"Thank you Denise." She nodded and walked out. We stood with our heads facing straight ahead and our hand behind out backs. Attention is what they call it.
"Lovely girl. She is a volunteer, so I expect respect from both of you." He looked through the files.
"Fen, it says you are a great soldier."
"Thank you sir." He looked up to Fen.
"That's all it says." He looked over to me.
"Davis, it says that you are new. And have potential to die. Do you believe that statement?"
"Yes." I should have said no. He stood up and walked in front of me. I could tell he didn't like my answer.
"Care to explain?"
"I have no experience sir. I'm weak, slow and most importantly I don't do well with pain." He laughed and leaned against his desk.
"Olient, I was just like you. Now look where I am. If you want to live, be better. Do better. This is a competition. You are fighting against the odds. And I expect you to win." He looked over to Fen.
"You'll do fine, we'll see if you do great though."
"Yes sir."
"Ease up soldiers. It's only a matter of time until you can't." I could see on his face that everything he was saying was from of the bottom of his heart. He was expecting us to die out there.
"Yes sir." Fen walked over to the door and held it open for me to leave first.
"Sir." I walked out, Fen was behind me.
"I'll take you two to your quorts." She told us what the buildings were and about the people we'd be bunking with. Her sweet voice reminded me of Linda it hadn't been a day and I already missed her. She opened the door for us and we walked in.
"Your beds are over there."
"Thank you Ms." Fen walked over to his bed.
"Oh please just call me Denise." She smiled.
"May I ask why you volunteered, Ms Denise." I asked her.
"My brother and my boyfriend joined. I just wanted to help in any way I could."
"That's very brave of you." She laughed and patted my shoulder.
"You're the one going into battle. I'd say your the brave one."
"I'd be a hell of a lot more brave if I had asked to join." She gave me a sympathetic smile.
"You didn't run away though." She looked over to the bed.
"Each one of these men are here to fight for freedom. I'd never be able to." She looked back over to me.
"You are doing a good thing. Don't forget that." She walked over to the door.
"Ask if you have any questions, Dinner is at seven. Breakfast is at five." She waved and shut that door. I walked over to my bed and sat my bag down.
"We should move out. Our commanding Darge will be mad if we show up too late." He took off his over shirt.
"Right." I kept mine on and we left the building. I followed him to the shooting range.
"Olient Fen and Davis reporting for duty sir!" Fen yelled and we stood at attention.
"Ah, the newbies. Watch the others and follow after. I shouldn't have to explain it." I watched one of the men. He rolled a piece of the gun before pulling the trigger back. He saw me watching him. He called me over to him.
"This part is called the cylinder. You load the bullets into it and then you aim it, do not close one eye. It will prevent you from being able to see everything. You want to see the whole picture, not just the main object." He aimed once more and fired.
"Any other questions you might have?"
"How do I reload it?" He sighed and went into detail about how to load it and how to fire it.
"Olient Davis! It's time for you to show your skills!" I looked back to my commander. I was not ready.
"It's fine Davis. Just breath and fire." He stepped back and let our commander stand next to me to watch.
Boot camp went on for another week
I kept in pace with the rest but only barely. And now we were being tested on everything. Henry Jones kept helping me. He was put in charge of the fifth and kept in boot camp with us so we'd all bond. We have to rely on each other out there. Fen ignored me most of the time and didn't have any troubles with anything except me.
"I thought I'd tell you first, considering you are the one struggling the most." Jones held his breath as I was dying inside.
"I understand your worry. Its soon. Really soon and we aren't prepared as much as I'd like us to be. But it's not our choice. I thought I'd tell you first so you'd be able to control your emotions better in front of the boys. You've been their hook."
"But I ain't their anchor Jones. All I do is talk to them."
"You, Davis, help them in ways I can't. I'm their leader, yes but they can't tell me their worries. I need you to be ready for them when I tell them tomorrow. Can you do that?"
