Coriane detested dancing with a vehement passion. Her feet would be so blistered by the end of it she could barely walk. But she did. And she smiled, and made small talk, and acted like dancing was her most favorite activity in all of Norta.
Because that is what you had to do to survive among wolves. You pretended to belong. But if you wanted to blend in, you had to show no weakness, and only ever bow to the alpha.
"Your highness, may I present Lady Coriane of House Jacos."
She wanted to roll her eyes at the formality and repetitiveness of the situation. What she wouldn't give to be settled in her bed with a book, or racing her brother on horseback right now.
She smiled and dipped into a curtsey.
"A pleasure", the King nodded to her.
She stood up and moved to stand at the edge of the ballroom.
From this angle, she had a perfect room of the whole ballroom. She smiled slightly when she saw her best friend, Sara Skonos, dancing with her brother.
The two had been skirting around each other for awhile now. It seemed Julian had finally gathered enough courage to ask her to dance.
"And why is someone as lovely as you not dancing?"
She looked to her right, and right into the dark eyes of the crown prince.
"Maybe because I find it much too early in the night to embarrass myself?"
He barked out a laugh, "I was much more prepared to have you say that you had not been asked, so that I may ask you myself. So at the risk of sounding like a right fool, would you care to dance my lady".
She sighed, "Not particularly, but I guess it could become quite unbecoming among the other nobles if I were to decline".
He offered her a hand, "And why should you not want to dance?"
She took it, "Because it's not an activity I am partial to, or even moderately good at".
He led her out onto the dance floor, before leaning in to whisper, "Maybe that is because you've never had a good partner".
The song was familiar, and she smiled slightly as her feet fell into place. It was a song her mother would play on the piano when she was younger, and a song she could play to the beat of her heart.
The prince led her in a way she had never danced before. She felt like she was floating across the floor. Every dip and turn was a new sensation, and she couldn't wait for the next.
The dance ended and she looked to see that her brother stood at the wall, signally her that it was time to leave.
"Thank you, your highness".
"Please", he took her hand, "Call me Tibe".
"Tibe", she smiled slightly.
She started to make her way through the couples when he pulled her back to him.
"May I know your name?"
She leaned in and whispered, "If I told you, then I might have to kill you".
He let go of her hand laughing, a small smile gracing his handsome feature as he shook his head in amusement, and she walked over to Julian.
"Getting cozy with the prince, are we?"
"Oh shut up".
He looked over her shoulder with a smirk, "Well, you should know that I can practically feel myself burning to ashes with that glare he's giving me".
"Oh really", she said nonchalantly.
He took her arm in his, "Why yes, dear sister. It may appear that I require an early funeral. Or at least an urn."
"And why would I keep you ashes?"
"Because you love me."
She patted his hand, "Only you could be so naive as to think that".
He gasped and put a hand to his heart, "You would me with your harsh words, Coral".
She rolled her eyes as they exited the ballroom and made their way outside.
After a silence, Julian spoke up:
"Did you tell him who you are?"
"I don't think he would have danced with me if he had known."
He snorted, "Only a fool would not dance with you, it's only the bigger fools who would be misled by our name".

693 words! I think that's an accomplishment! For me at least.......Anyways, I finished the Red Queen a few days ago, and was extremely disappointed to not be able to find any fanfiction on it. So, I decided to write my own!
I don't expect to get a lot of reads on this, partially because RQ only came out in February, and partially because this is kinda crappy.
But, if you're reading this, feedback would be greatly appreciated! Especially on character development!
Writer out!
