Nearby tree limbs and strewn about debris crashing against the exterior of the chateau with sharp sudden cracks, and the wind whistling around the small building made the consecutive presence of the raging storm very clear. It wasn't the first hurricane I've lived through in all my time residing on Kildare Island, born and raised here I had experienced one almost every year; so sleeping through and or dismissing the noises wasn't the most problematic thing in the world; and honestly, it wasn't until I woke up in the middle of the night sweating through my shirt that I had been truly unnerved.

The power must have gone out hours ago for the house to be this hot. JJ was usually the biggest cuddle bug I knew and attached to me like his life depended on it anytime we slept, well, anytime really, but now he was sprawled out on his stomach; his hair stuck to his forehead due to the sweat clinging to him. I got out of bed, reaching behind my back and unclipping my bra, that I was certain I could wring out like a wet rag, and meandered out of the room. On my trek down the hallway, I peeked my head into my brother's room to check on him, he was fast asleep, the covers, like mine and JJ's pooled down by his feet.

Once in the kitchen, I flicked the light switch and confirmed very quickly that I had been correct about the power when the room remained just as dark. I pulled open the junk drawer, blindly pushing aside a couple of baggies of weed, some batteries, and a lost pair of scissors, before coming across a flashlight and illuminating a streak of the room.

Thanking my lucky stars I had gone grocery shopping, I pulled a tub of moose tracks ice cream from the freezer, figuring it'd be better off in my stomach than wasting away in the rapidly warming freezer to melt. It's doing me a favor in cooling me down anyways.

Finding a semi-transparent plastic bowl tucked away on the shelf I filled it with my tub of ice cream, spoon, and flashlight, wandering over to the living room and getting settled on the couch. I grabbed the remote to turn on some T.V. before getting angry at the buttons for not working, and then remembering the power was out.

I sighed deeply, standing the mini flashlight up, and encompassing it with the bowl, maximizing the minimal light it had provided earlier, before digging into the chocolatey goodness. I gave myself a brain freeze within the first three bites, but it was worth it in every way.

About a half an hour later, of sitting in silence eating my ice cream, fully prepared to succumb to the frigid, but tasty death that was awaiting me as my brain suffered its third bout of frostbite, a heart attack nearly took me out instead as a tall, broad shadow rounded the corner. Sucking in a sharp breath I flung the spoon I had just cleared of ice cream at the newfound presence.

"Ow!" It wailed.

I almost choked on my ice cream at the expression of pain from a very familiar voice. JJ sauntered over to the couch, glowering at me, spoon twirling around his fingers.

"Really?" he asked, "A spoon?"

"It's the only thing I had to defend myself!" I countered, snatching it back from him and digging back into the dessert sitting in my lap.
