The Outerbanks, paradise on earth. It really was, I couldn't deny that much. Sand, sun, and the most delicious vanilla ice cream on the planet. What could make a place any better? I'm ashamed to say it's been two years since I've made my return. I volunteered as a camp counselor my first summer back home, and my father got remarried the summer after. I couldn't settle for any less than a whole summer here, that would simply be an injustice to myself, but I was back now, for the next three months all I was going to do was enjoy myself on this little slice of heaven, with an angel of a boy.
"Here you go, babe." The tall brunette standing above me, partially blocking the sun extended his arm, and the cone in his hand, two scoops of pale white ice cream overflowed from the top.
"Thank you," I smiled, accepting the dessert and bringing the frozen sweet to my lips.
I had met Marcus at the summer camp I volunteered at, he was the head counselor. Our cabins pulled several elaborate stunts to get us to go out together, eventually one worked, and we've been together ever since.
"How do you feel about surfing?" I asked, gliding my tongue around the beads of ice cream that were all too quickly melting off.
A wide smile spread over my boyfriend's strawberry cream-glazed lips, "I used to go every now and then with some buddies when I lived with my dad in California."
I leaned over the table, pecking the leftovers of the ice cream from his mouth, "Good. My cousin has been driving me insane to meet you first, but tomorrow we have no plans, other than a relaxing day at the beach if you're down."
Marcus captured my lips again before agreeing, "That sounds wonderful."
After a dinner with my aunt, uncle, and little cousin (which felt more like an interrogation), a good night's rest, and a delicious breakfast, we were ready to hit the beach. After walking down it a ways, I let my boyfriend settle on an area while I enjoyed the sun on my face. The beating rays and repetitive waves inanimately welcomed me back.
Unlike the group of teenagers not too far down the beach. A boy and girl with darker toned skin laid out on the sand, laughing together at their friend who had just been knocked on his ass by a set of messy brown curls that belonged to another boy who definitely wasn't inanimate.
"Bye y/n."
Not babe.
That was the last time I saw him, the last memory I have of him, vulnerable, heartbroken, angry, hurting.
"Are you okay?" Marcus rested a hand on my shoulder, pulling me from my trance.
I nodded, faux reassurance lacing my demeanor, "I'm great," I inhaled a deep breath and leaned down to grab my surfboard, "I'll beat you to the water," and that I did, diving under as quickly as possible, letting my tears mix in with the waves.
