Me, Sarah and Molly moved towards the door. Sarah looked through a small hole that she'd made in the wall.
"There's over thirty of them..." She whispered, motioning for Molly to look.
"Okay so, me, you and Jonathan go outside and take care of these, with Richard as back up and Lilly taking care of the base." Molly said, turning round to look at the group.
"Hey, what about me?" I asked.
"You can...you can look after AJ.
"He fell asleep on the couch ages ago." I pointed out.
"Okay Clem...you come out with us. If you're any good at fighting, you can come on the next run, okay? Think of this as a test. But me and Sarah go first, you stay behind us, is that clear?"
"Yes." I muttered, rolling my eyes.
"Good. Okay, now we've got that out of the way, let's go. Lilly, take AJ upstairs, Richard, get by the door, Clementine, pass me Hilda."
"Hilda?" I asked.
"My pickaxe. You're telling me you've never named your weapons? I shook my head, stifling a laugh.
"Pickaxe, Clem?"
I handed it to her, taking out my knife. Sarah picked up her spear, jonathan ready with his club, and Richard had his axe out. Lilly took AJ upstairs before coming down, crouching behind the counter with a gun incase any walkers got past us. We were ready.
Molly opened the door. We were hit with a wave of zombies. Sarah knocked the first few down, with Jonathan and Molly killing off the ones at the sides. Richard stayed back, taking out the few that got past. I sighed. It looked like they had it covered.
They were pretty confident. Too confident.
There were no less than fifty walkers coming at us from all sides. I froze. I thought I could see someone familiar...
No. It must have been my imagination. I shook my head furiously and gripped my hatchet.
They all came swarming in from the side streets. Molly tried to close the door but by this time it was too late. Walkers began making their way inside, moaning loudly. I began to help the group, laying into the walkers around me with such vigor that I was actually clearing a path. We were all so absorbed in the fight that we, I, didn't even notice Richard.
He was grabbed from behind, and at that same split second Sarah was too. I gulped, looking from side to side desperatley. It was like a video game. Who dies? Who will you save? I had no idea. I ran towards Sarah as Richard got ripped apart. Little did I know, Sarah was already bitten. She died only minutes later, smothered by walkers who could smell her blood. With this distraction, we managed to kill off the others, untill there was only a mass of dead bodies left lying on the shop floor.
I turned, looking at the others.
Lilly was on the floor, staring at the wall. Her face was an odd white colour, her lips pursed. She was trembling. Tears slipped down her face. Jonathan stood in the corner of the room, and began sliding down the wall. His eyes were closed and he was muttering to himself, repeating the same words over and over.
Molly looked at me. Her eyes were misted over. I hoped she wouldn't start crying. After all, I was still a kid myself. I needed some sense of order and stability. Everyone breaking down was definetley not a good idea.
I could hear AJ screeching.
Great...I thought bitterly, climbing up the stairs.
Just what we need...more tears.
I found him, scooped him up and settled him. I fed him and then ate myself, realising how hungry I actually was. Settling him down again, I headed back down, trying to figure out what we were going to do.
I cleared my throat nervously, unsure of how they were going to react. People did crazy things after they lost people they cared about.
"Um so...guys...I am so sorry about that an-"
"W...why are you sorry? W...what happened was all d...down to th...them. Th...they did it." Lilly stuttered, half to herself. Her fist was clenched and she looked like she was about to kill someone.
I sighed.
"You know um...we're gonna have to do something about these...these bodies. If Molly and, hopefully you Jonathan can help me move them outside and then burn them..."
"Fine," Jonathan stood up shakily, gripping his club. I smiled gratefully at him, and he nodded back. I guess he just wanted to do something.
With their help, we managed to get all the bodies shifted out. In a seperate pile there was Richard and Sarah, who had both been stabbed through the head so they wouldn't turn. We buried them instead of putting them in the burning pile of walkers. As the flames flickered, Jonathan came over.
"Clementine, I'm going away for a few days, maybe a couple weeks. I need to be alone for a while, but I promise to keep myself safe. Look after Lilly, she's in a very delicate state at the moment. Look out for Molly, too. She acts like she doesn't need help, but she does. And for gods sake keep that baby alive,"
I smiled, and gave him a quick hug, before he took his pack and his club and left.
As I watched him go, Lilly came and stood beside me. I squeezed her hand sympatheticly and she smiled at me through her tears.
"It's going to be okay, Lilly," I said slowly, smoke rising into the air.
"It's going to be okay."
