It was the day that everyone had been waiting for, a glimpse of team USA versus team Iceland. Team USA gathered in their locker room, dressing in their hockey gear as coach Bombay walked in, "Alright are we ready for warm-ups?" Indiana looked at Julie, surprised with the coach's new look. As he walked through the room, multiple players commented on both the outfit and the slicked back hair.
"Nice jacket, did you get two pairs of pants with that?" Averman jokingly asked, causing the locker room to erupt with laughter.
"Have a good night last night coach?" asked Fulton.
"Yeah, it was fine," replied Bombay as he shuffled through the papers in his folder.
"What'd ya do?" asked Portman.
"Oh, I just watched some TV, got to bed early," said Bombay.
"But not without a little dessert, right?" Portman interrogated, walking away. Indiana watched the boys converse with their coach, confused at how they were speaking to him.
"A little ice cream, maybe?" Continued Fulton.
Averman walked over to continue the taunts, "Nice haircut. What, ya lose a bet?" Bombay sighed, choosing to ignore his team's antics for now. Team USA put on their helmets and walked out to the ice, preparing to face off against Iceland.
"Live from Los Angeles, welcome to the Junior Goodwill Games. Tonight's matchup, team USA faces off against team Iceland. I'm here with Indiana Gaffney, sister of goaltender Julie Gaffney. How are we feeling about tonight's matchup?" Averman asked, pretending to be a reporter.
Indiana sighed but gave in as he put the stick in front of her as a fake microphone, "Well Averman, I feel good about tonight. Offensively I feel like we could have a chance."
"Thank you, Indiana. Now we have with us Greg Goldberg, goaltender for team USA. Greg, what is it gonna take to beat these feisty icelanders tonight?" Averman moved his attention to Goldberg, allowing Indiana to skate around the ice and prepare for the game.
"I think it'll take a supreme individual effort by me, Greg Goldberg..." Indiana heard Goldberg speak highly of himself while skating away, his voice slowly disappearing. Indiana increased her skating speed in order to catch up to the blonde, who hadn't spoken a word to her yet today.
"Hey, Banksie. How you feeling?" Indiana asked the boy.
"I'm fine, Indiana," stated Banks. Indiana took note of his tone and the fact that he used her whole first name when speaking to her.
"Did I do something?" she asked, anxiously.
"You seriously don't know?" Banks asked, looking from her to Luis. "You're a smart girl, Indiana. You'll figure it out."
"Hi everybody, welcome to today's game. This is a very important matchup, team USA against Iceland in what could be a preview of the championship game. Iceland, coached by Wolf "the dentist" Stansson. He'll be taking on Gordon Bombay."
Jesse's line started the game with Fulton and Portman out on defense. Jesse was tied up at the faceoff dot, as Portman skated into the Iceland player and pushed him to the ground. As the referee came up to Portman, he raised his arm, knocking the referee off balance and knocking him onto the floor. As a direct result of this, Portman was instantly kicked out of the game.
Coach tried to yell, "You're throwing him out? You can't do that, it's three seconds into the game!" But the referees would not hear his complaints.
Indiana watched from the bench as Goldberg bit on a play too easily, allowing for a pass across the ice. Goldberg watched from the ice as the Iceland player taunted him with the puck before scoring and celebrating by Goldberg's net.
"It's one-nothing Iceland. Iceland outhitting and outskating team USA in the first period."
Adam Banks and Indiana switched out for Jesse's line. After a big save by Goldberg, Adam grabbed the puck behind the net and began skating towards the neutral zone. Noticing that a player was coming his way, Adam passed the puck up to Indiana. Indiana watched as Adam was taken out at the hip by an Iceland player. Shrugging it off, she deked around the defense before shooting at the goal, where the goalie was able to catch it with his glove. Luis was tripped up on his way to the goal, followed by Ken being checked by two Iceland players simultaneously. Indiana grabbed the puck in the neutral zone but was tripped by an Iceland player. The puck found an Iceland stick, who took it down into team USA's zone and scored yet again. Indiana watched from her stomach, slamming her stick into the ice. The referees would simply not call anything.
"Where's our concentration? You guys are running around like a bunch of chickens with your heads cut off!" Stated Bombay.
"We're doing our best," stated Jesse.
"Well, your best isn't good enough anymore. Blow this game and we are one loss away from elimination. You guys might want to go home early, but I sure as heck don't," exclaimed Bombay, walking out of the locker room.
"My, that was inspiring," claimed Averman.
"Coach doesn't want to leave behind all of his fancy hair products and clothes in Los Angeles," mocked Indiana.
"Not to mention the fancy house," remarked Averman.
"Four to nothing Iceland as we head for the final period. I hope Bombay's got some magic up his sleeve, because he's getting manhandled tonight." Another goal allowed by Goldberg increased Iceland's lead by five.
"You're off, Goldberg," Bombay called his starting goalie off of the ice. Julie rushed to grab her equipment, excited to be finally getting her chance. As she positioned herself in the net, two Iceland players skated over to mock her.
"Sending in a woman to do a man's job," one remarked.
"Don't break a nail," remarked the other. Indiana, overhearing the conversation, skated towards her sister to see what was going on, but was waved off by Julie.
Julie looked at them softly, "I'm sorry boys, but can you help me with my pads, please?" Indiana smirked as the two boys agreed quickly and bent over. Julie used her hands to push the two down on the ground, instantly being kicked out of the game. "See you around fellas."
Bombay sent in Fulton to shoot on the Iceland goaltender, who saved his shot glove side, leaving an imprint on his palm. Moments later, Adam Banks got the puck, skating along the left-wing side. He moved into center ice, spinning around Iceland's defense who ended up taking each other out. Adam deked around the goalie, scoring top right corner. Indiana smiled, watching as he held his arms up in the air to celebrate. As Indiana made her way to Banks, she watched as his wrist was viciously slashed by an Iceland player's stick.
"Adam? You alright?" The girl skated over to him, taking off her helmet and examining his wrist.
Adam groaned in pain, looking at the girl while he winced, "I'm fine, Indie." Stated Adam, pulling his wrist away from the girl's view. Indiana skated over to the Iceland player, pushing him backwards.
"Save your breath, baby," Gunnar Stahl said to her, pushing her back. Fulton immediately skated over, grabbing the girl in an attempt to keep her from getting thrown out.
"I could take you any day, you--" Fulton instantly covered her mouth, the girl glaring at him. Fulton led her and Adam to the bench, where they both sat down extremely frustrated and ticked off. The second half of the game continued where the first half left off, team USA losing to team Iceland twelve to one. The group skated tiredly to the locker room, each player laying back into their stalls. The group sighed and awaited the verbal beating they would surely get from Bombay.
