Camilo stays with me while the rain pours on. He sits by my side under the branches of the flowering tree. "Lo siento, mi amor, you don't deserve this." Camilo says, and he reaches up to pick a vibrant yellow flower from a low hanging branch. "We're going to sort this out I promise," He says, tucking the flower behind my ear. I smile sadly, resting my head against his chest. "Abuela won't let you back in the house," Camilo sighs. "I guess we'll have to sneak you in." I look up at him in surprise. "Sneak me in? Wait, we?" I ask, looking puzzled. "I'm not just going to leave you out here by yourself, mi vida." He says squeezing my hand. "And si, 'we' as in Dolores y yo. I'm certain she'll help, she knows the truth." He has a determined look on his face. "Thank you, Cami," I say, he smiles at me, kissing my forehead and stroking my hair. I can't believe he's sticking with me... I think, looking at his face. His hair is dripping with rain, his freckled cheeks blush pink as I gaze at him, his eyes are crinkled in a caring gaze. The moment is perfect despite the preceding events.
"I'll go in and find Dolores, explain the plan." Camilo says, an hour later as we are hiding around the side of Casita. "Are you sure this is a good idea?" I ask anxiously, twirling a strand of hair around my finger. "no te preocupes, mi amor, it's all going to work out. Wait here." He kisses my cheek before heading inside, like we planned. I crouch down, hidden by the leaves of a shrub. Now I wait...
Camilo's POV...
This has to work... I walk inside, and see that Gracie and her parents have already left, and the candle is burning brightly back in Abuela's windowsill. "Corazon! Aye I was so worried, where did you go? It's so late!" Mami runs up to me and begins planting kisses all over my face. "Sorry, Mami, I was looking for Y/n." She steps back, giving me a forlorn look. "I couldn't find her..." I say, looking down at my feet. "I'm sorry, mi vida, I know this must be hard, I'm sure she's ok." I give her a small smile. "Abuela doesn't want you looking for her, Camilo. I know you cared about her, and I did too, but I don't know who was at fault, and Abuela believed Gracie." She hugs me and I can tell she really is sorry. "It's ok, Mami, I'm ok." I say, giving her a smile. She kisses my forehead. As she hurries off Dolores walks over. I'm about to speak when she cuts me off, raising a finger to her lips. I look over her shoulder to see Abuela deep in conversation with Julieta just outside the kitchen. Dolores indicates towards the lounge and I follow, glazing over my shoulder on occasion.
"I know you're planning to sneak Y/n inside." She says quietly as we sit down on the couch. "Please, hermana, you know she wouldn't steal the candle, Gracie framed her!" Dolores has to believe me, she has to... Dolores takes a deep breath, and I wait anxiously for her to say something. "You're right, Camilo, I believe Y/n." I exhale in relief. "But how are we supposed to get her inside? Abuela has blocked off her door..." Dolores says. "I- I was planning on sneaking her into mine, Abuela is less likely to find her in there." I say sheepishly. She rolls her eyes, shaking her head. "Ok, so how are we going to do this?"
Y/n's POV...
After waiting in the silence for what feels like forever, I hear footsteps approaching. I peak over one of the long, dark green leaves hiding me and see two figures slink around the corner. Camilo and Dolores... I get to my feet and hug Camilo tightly. "Come on, we're in the clear, Abuela has just gone to bed." Dolores whispers. I give her an appreciative smile and nod. "Vamos, senorita!" Camilo whispers excitedly, taking my hand. We creep around the side of the house, pausing every now and then to let Dolores listen. "Tio Agustin y tía Julieta have just gone to bed." She whispers, leaning her ear upwards. As we reach the entrance, Camilo gently pushes the door open. The wood creaks slightly and a stream of light spills out from inside. Camilo slips inside, and a few moments later his hand reappears, beckoning us inside.
We shuffle through the opened door. Camilo presses his finger to his lip. As we tiptoe across the tiles, I look up to see my door has been boarded up. A lump rises in my throat at the sight of it. "Shit." Camilo suddenly whispers, and he pulls me behind a pillar. "What is it?" I ask in a hushed voice. "Isa." He says, indicating towards the stairs. I peek around the pillar, and see Isabella walking down the stairs. Does she ever go to bed? I think as I watch her. She turns towards us and I jump back, trodding on Camilo's foot in the process. "Mierda!" He whispers, hopping on one foot, and clutching his toes. Dolores puts her hands over his mouth and whispers, "SHHH" I hear Isa's footsteps stop. I mouth to Camilo 'I'm so sorry' over and over. Isabella's footsteps begin again and sound like they're coming closer. Shit she's going to find us... I think, holding my breath. As Isa is almost close enough to see us, Camilo jumps out in front of her. I inhale sharply, and Dolores puts a hand to her mouth. Neither of us moves a muscle.
Camilo's POV...
Without thinking I jump out from behind the pillar. Isa jumps back in surprise, looking me up and down. "Camilo? What are you doing out here? It's late!" Shit, I need to get her to leave otherwise she'll see Y/n. Thinking quickly, I respond; "Well I could ask you the same thing!" I say, crossing my arms and frowning. "I'm getting water." She rolls her eyes. "Well- Same!" I blurt out. That was pretty convincing, if I do say so myself! She rolls her eyes again and sighs. "Whatever, at least you're not here smooching your lying little novia." She says nonchalantly. At her words I clench my jaw and feel rage and anger boiling inside me. Without another word she flicks her hair and waltzes off towards the kitchen. I glower at her as she fills up a glass and walks back up the stare, glancing over her shoulder at me as she disappears into her room. "All clear." I whisper.
Y/n's POV...
Dolores and I exhale in relief. "That was close, we gotta hurry." Dolores says, tiptoeing towards the stairs. Camilo takes my hand. He still looks agitated by Isabella's remark. "Well, maybe smooching isn't such a bad idea," I whisper to Camilo. He smiles and kisses me. "Seriamente?" Dolores exclaims, pulling us apart. "Do you want to get caught?" Camilo smiles sheepishly at me and the blush rises in my cheeks. We creep up the stairs, and reach Camilo's door without any more interruptions. "Thanks Dolores, it means a lot that you're helping me," I say, giving her an appreciative hug. "No hay problema, Y/n, I don't fall for Gracie's lies. I'm sorry I couldn't prove your innocence though," She says, smiling sadly. "We'll figure it out." I say with a determined expression. "Goodnight hermana," Camilo says, opening his door. We slip inside, finally out of the woods.
