"Yo Ari! Ari!" A male voice shouted. The said girl turned to see a man with slicked back hair approach her. She let out a giggle as he bumped into groups of people to make it towards her. She stopped when his out of breath figure hunched forward to regulate his breathing.
"H-H-H-How...did you do...on that test today. Man...that wore me out. Damn people cant split apart even if it meant life or death." He smirked. Arianna looked up at him with a half smile.
"I feel like i did ok. Although, I know I did better than you any day of the week. If your just trying to find an excuse why you did so bad, maybe you should study for once."
"Oh shut up. I can do it. I just chose not to."
"Im sure thats the case." Arianna smiled as they walked out of the building into the courtyard. Wyatt was one of the few men at this school who she felt like she could openly trust. Sure his habits in school were terrible but that didnt mean as a person he was though.
They met the same way they talked, about how they did on the test and finding out he never studied but she did.
"So Ari have you heard, some dance thing is being held this year in place of prom."
"Why did something happen? It would be a shame if it were something stupid like couples having sex in the bathroom or drug use. I mean come on, its a school event!" Arianna sighed and looked back up at Wyatt.
"Apparently too many girls were showing up skimpily and getting drunk. I would have figured that you would have at least waited till your home to do that sort of thing, you know."
"Yeah i hear you. So whats the difference this year compared to last year then? Less glitter and more fabric. I dont mind that for a change."
Wyatt laughed. "Supposedly its supposed to be that way, but from what I've heard some jocks and some of those meth heads in the back of the school are planning to sneak some stuff in anyway."
The pair made it to a white car. It wasnt much but it got Arianna places. Her mom had bought it super cheap for her 16th birthday and ever since then the car went everywhere with her. Its white flat top shined under the afternoon sun and seemed to become a pure white like the care had once been in the 90's.
"Well, I hope you have fun making it back home. We have another test in two days but that one will give us a study guide-"
"One you wont ever finish nor use to study I assume, right?"
"Look, I will if you want ok?"
She reacted up and pat his cheek as part of her body opened the door and entered the car. She gave a motherly smile. "I only want whats best for my friend after all. And that is is not bitching to me after every test you take on how much you failed and how much the teacher did a horrible job creating it."
"Yeah well listen Ari....i have to ask something. About that dance thing-"
"Ill think about it Wyatt. Its just that we are kinda low on money now and you know how much those dress charge for-"
"Just rent them like we do. Im obviously not going to tell the difference between a dress you rented for the night and one that you bought off the shelf at Coach."
Arianna broke into a fit of laughter that was so loud that bystanders turned for a second to observe the scene. She clutched her stomach as her lungs tried to suck in breath to laugh more. Its was like that for a few minutes as Wyatt stared while blushing and awkwardly giggling with her here and there.
"First off, Coach is a bag company, not a dress company."
"Same shit right? You pay for the brand and not the fabric that made it. Its not like a watch or something."
"Designer anything is fairly expensive and usually that stuff is hand made in limited quanity in a foreign country-"
"Look I dont care if you find a dress at a thrift shop, all that matters is if your able to go or not. Knowing this school, they will go up for sale in about a week or two. You dont have to give me an definite answer now but....I just need to know ok."
Arianna smiled at his nervous yet concerned expression "I will think on it. I have to get to work so i guess we'll talk about it later. Just keep those blue eyes shining of yours and I may go." She joked as she sat herself in the car buckled her seatbelt.
Crancking the engine, she smiled and waved at him as she drive off. Her mind remained in focus as her car slid to a stop at a traffic light. It took this light a while to go green so she sighed and sat back in her seat, thoughts of the event that just took place prior still fresh and rerunning in her mind.
She loved Wyatt, she did. But more so as a friend. He was attractive with his black slicked hair and bluish green eyes that seemed to glow, but he wasn't her type in the least bit. She wanted someone to challenge her. Someone who saw eye to eye with her. Who liked to study on school nights. Heck who even enjoyed animals and the arts as much as she did.
The bright green of the traffic light blared onto her closed eyelids and soon she accelerated the car back to a driving speed. The road was endless just like her mind at this point. It did however have faults and cracks that made the car shake just like her and Wyatt's relationship. However mind wondered back to that boy in the café.
He was cute too. She was just unsure if he would be a good choice to go to this dance with. Plus what if she did want to go with him, would he even accept her feelings or even go with her? How would she break that to Wyatt that she liked some stranger at some random café over him who she knew since she moved into this city. Plus who was to say that this random guy that she happened to like who she met about two weeks ago actually liked her or she didn't know....even remembered him like she did!
As her 98 Nissan Stanza pulled up into its normal work parking spot, her mind began to slowly settle. She got out of the car and slowly approached the bright building that shined in the run down strip mall. The pictures of silhouetted animals adorned the glass windows, advertising the animal supplies for sale along with a tiny sign stating that now smaller animals such as retiles and birds were for sale.
The ding of the bell sounded as she entered the building with a smile. The smell of pet food along with wood shavings invaded her nostrils.
"Oh Ari, willyou take this customer? I have to do something in the back. Ill check you in while i do that." Said the woman behind the counter as she ran into the back room. Arianna slipped on her apron and stood behind the cash register. She greeted the customer with a smile. "How may I help-"
"Well then, I guess I found out where you work now too huh?"
There smiling at her was the man from the café, Luke.
